Sen. Cruz: Doctors Opposing Travel Ban ‘Working for Obama’

Source: Mediaite

State of the Union host Candy Crowley pressed Senator Ted Cruz’s (R-TX) on his call for a travel ban from west Africa Sunday morning, pointing out that the public health community unanimously opposed such a ban, and asking if the junior senator from Texas would overrule CDC and NIH experts were he in president (a-HEM).

“The doctors and experts that are saying this are working for the administration and are repeating the administration talking points,” Cruz said. “Their arguments don’t make sense.”

Cruz said that CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden’s argument that a travel ban would cause travelers to avoid airport screenings (which was in fact a small portion of Frienden’s argument) failed, as travelers could pass through screenings anyway due to ebola’s long incubation period.

In fact public health officials oppose the ban for numerous reasons, arguing it would cause travelers to go underground and thus make them (and the virus) harder to track, that it would sow panic in the affected regions, and more.

Canuck Cruz, shamelessly exploiting a crisis and parroting Alex Jones talking points.

Ever wonder what the GOP would have done after 9-11 if a Democrat had been president?

Here's your answer. There would have been no coming together, yellow ribbons and "United we stand" sentiment. They would have proceeded to attack, disregard the good of the country or the need for calm, and would have just used the event as a political football to try to regain power.

Perhaps I'm reading too much into this, but I get the feeling Candy wishes Cruz was president. How else could you ask such a hypothetical question of a man who has NO chance of being in president?

they do, they honestly just do not respect a man that continuously tamps down fear and will not exploit it as they do and would. The are fascists, they are evil, they are elected in America as they were once elected in another nation that was not paying enough attention to the politics.

Thank God OBAMA is in charge.....he agreed with the unanimous opinion of the health care community...why is there one soul on DU that is not in the same agreement, with Obama but in agreement with Cruz?

Do you feel no shame, now?

1. There are no direct flights from W. Africa to the US. You have to connect, usually in Europe. Are we going to ground all flights from Paris, Rome, London, Berlin, etc.?

2. Are you going to turn away all cargo vessels that have visited any W African port?

3. Have you considered what will happen to the world economy if you did that?

4. Have you considered what the top brass of corporations would say if suddenly their executives couldn't travel freely between the US and Europe?

Oh, and consider that we have been trying to close the border between the US and Mexico since we grabbed Texas from Mexico with little to no success.

Unless the passport is forged, the person's passport shows his or her nationality.

If that person is of Liberian, Sierra Leonian or Guinean origin, or frankly, any African country, that person will need a visa in addition to a passport.

Under a visa suspension, no one from those countries could travel here without a valid visa, but the visa ban would not touch other countries unless or until Ebola became a problem in another country.

It would help if our neighbors to the north and south were to institute a similar visa suspension, which would cut down on folks walking over the border.

The visa suspension would not prevent supplies and medical and other helping volunteers to go into those countries, and it would not stop internet or telephone communication. Of course, it would be helpful if returnees would submit to a 21 day quarantine upon return to the US.

And right now, for example, air service out of Monrovia, Liberia, seems to be limited to Brussels Airline and Royal Air Moroc, at least for JfK, ORD and Atlanta. I think that there are flights to Atlanta and Houston on Delta from Lagos Nigeria, but Nigeria is nearly 42 days away from its last reported infection. We now can get itineraries from most airlines, so obviously we can find out who coming to our shores has come from Monrovia on those airlines, for example.

None of this would preclude any corporation from flying its people from the US to Europe, the Americas, Asia or most countries in Africa.

I'm not as familiar with cargo ships, but it seems that something could be worked out that would not crash the world's economy but would still greatly reduce the possibility of the Ebola infection from establishing itself outside the current hot zones.

the Flu kills somewhere between 5,000-50,000 US Citizens a year and we just shrug. Automobile deaths kill between 30,000 and 40,000 per year. Yet we are freaking out over 1, yes, ONE Ebola death and two infections out of a population of 320 Million. I just don't get it. We let 20,000 people die of HIV under St. Ronnie, but 2 people get infected with Ebola and the Republicans and Faux news go into panic mode.

I was living in NYC in the '80s, and although I wasn't affected personally, the terrible situation was obvious.

Like AIDS, Ebola is a terrible disease. The death is awful. We must push development of a cure, if possible, and also ways of treating the disease to maximize the number of survivors. We must also work as hard as possible to contain then eliminate the disease where it crops up.

The WHO estimates that by the end of December, without the ultimate efforts by the entire world, the number of new Ebola cases in the current West African hot zone will be 10,000 per week, of whom 50-70% will die. At the moment, we have only 11 beds in the four treatment centers, although teach hospitals in major cities with high level ICUs are preparing themselves to take Ebola patients in the event that the number exceeds 11, which it may.

People are comparing Ebola to the flu, which affects many, but generally kills only 3% of those infected.

I think that the better comparisons are with tuberculosis, which were major scourages before and antibiotics. respectively. One of my great-grandmothers died a horrible death from that disease, leaving a husband and three young children in an era before most modern conveniences. It took a terrible toll on my grandmother and her two siblings that I would not wish on my worst enemies. Prospective visitors and immigrants to our country were refused entry because of the disease, and I completely understand why. I believe that Ebola should be treated similarly at this time, but look forward to the day when the disease is conquered.

Cruz is an Open Market Sideman/Carnival Side Show.

In Texas it is the law that a person coming into a public school must first come in to the office. Some larger school districts have a lock system where entrance into the building after the first bell is through the office only. Only a Dictator could shut down a free country. Oh, Yes, Cruz shut down the government. Dictator What-to-Be Cruz speaks out to shut parts of the government down and like Rick Perry, Cruz makes it a public policy.

What a scary clown.

mouth.

Quoted above, "Cruz said that CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden’s argument that a travel ban would cause travelers to avoid airport screenings (which was in fact a small portion of Frienden’s argument) failed, as travelers could pass through screenings anyway due to ebola’s long incubation period. "

In other words anyone who knows they have been exposed to ebola will get out of Dodge before they show symptoms. Which as doctors point out will drive ebola underground and increase the panic and exodus infected persons from Africa to where they can be treated. Which will be the US and Europe.

For a travel ban to work all flights originating from anywhere in Africa and all connecting flights to Europe and the US would also have to be banned.

With travel bans it's either a world ban on travel or none at all.

Track and Treat should be the motto

"Is the Ebola crisis sinking the Democrsts in the mid-terms"? The real question should be if the fear mongering has finally woken up folks to the fact that their media is owned by the cons and they are all liars and fear mongers who do not want the folks to wake up and vote them all out.

CNN sucks the nurturing teats of the cons and their endless ad money.

Asked about Cuba sending hundreds of doctors to West Africa, Candy Cane's sole question, she allowed Cruz to....blame Obama? Has propaganda ever been so transparent?

CNN...network of con propaganda and anti-OBAMA tripe, it is so obvious.

Senator Cruz can impose his own personal travel ban. No need to impose a travel ban on the vast majority of Texans (or anyone else in the USA for that matter) at this time.
