SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Apple says it sold 39.3 million iPhones in the last quarter, or 16 percent more than a year ago, which is a record for the quarter. That's partly due to excitement over new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus models that Apple began selling last month.
The surge in iPhone sales helped the company beat Wall Street's expectations for the three months that ended Sept. 27. Overall, the company's profit rose more than 12 percent from a year ago, to $8.5 billion. Total sales also rose more than 12 percent, to $42.1 billion.
While iPhone sales were up, Apple also sold 13 percent fewer iPad tablets than it did a year ago. That follows an industry-wide decline in tablet sales. But the company reported lower iPad sales than analysts had expected.

(12,047 posts)Imagine yourself working where the conditions are so bad that you would rather commit suicide by jumping off of a roof than enduring one more day of long hours without a break, grueling deadlines, and abusive management. This is the daily reality for thousands of employees who have to cope with survival in Apples China-based factories that make many of their gadgets.
18 workers jumped to their death off of Apple sweatshop roofs. But instead of improving working conditions, factory owners installed suicide nets around the building to catch jumpers so they cant commit suicide while on the clock.
While many of us eagerly await Apples next generation iPhone or MacBook, Apple conveniently hides these reprehensible working conditions on the other side of the planet. The tech giants glaring and shocking lack of social responsibility plays an oppressive role in the lives of those workers who hustle to make their products. Its tantamount to slave labor.

The woman who nearly died making your iPad
Tian Yu worked more than 12 hours a day, six days a week. She had to skip meals to do overtime. Then she threw herself from a fourth-floor window
For the past month, the teenager had worked on an assembly line churning out parts for Apple iPhones and iPads.
At Foxconn's Longhua facility, that is what the 400,000 employees do: produce the smartphones and tablets that are sold by Samsung or Sony or Dell and end up in British and American homes.

(4,825 posts)that was just a phone. I did succumb to having something that could receive emails and occasionally even access DU. So, I am a sell out in my friend's view. It's all relative. My phone is a Nokia Windows phone, as I am in a windows environment with professional and private life. One thing that sold me is how cheap it is ($50), and that it can use WiFi to call. Maybe it is a sinking ship, but I always like the dark horses. They (Microsoft) kept a Finnish company going instead of slave labor in China. I think that works for me.
