WASHINGTON An unidentified man was in custody Wednesday night after he climbed over the White House fence and was swiftly apprehended on the North Lawn by uniformed Secret Service agents and their dogs.
The incident came about a month after a previous White House fence jumper sprinted across the same lawn, past armed uniformed agents and entered the mansion before he was felled in the ceremonial East Room and taken into custody.

Thank goodness for the dogs.
EDIT: I'm now watching Good Morning America's coverage of this story - and I wonder where the dogs were all the other times.

(70,490 posts)The idea is for overwhelming and hopefully non lethal force and if the person has,
a gun, or a knife, of a bomb then the dog gets hurt before a human does.
The dogs got the person w/in 10 to 15' of the fence. Good dog.

(14,881 posts)I stopped the video right at the point where his foot hit -- it's blurry and dark, but you can see the poor dog's head snap to the left from the kick.
I don't see a 2nd dog in the video.

(32,967 posts)It is my understanding those dogs are trained to grab and hold until their human partner/trainer tells the dog to release. I really hope they got a few decent chomps in to get a good hold. Ear skritchies and steak for dinner tonight after the Vet cleared them. Good Dog!
I remember seeing a show about how they train those dogs and one of the dogs who excelled in every way flunked out because he just could not resist taking an extra bite after the cease order

(70,490 posts)A good security dog or dogs is just what is needed for that kind of
security work. Overwhelming non lethal force and if the person
has a gun or knife or a bomb then the dog might help to save a person's
life.
Not having a good dog or dogs on duty when the last fence jumper got
inside the White House was unforgivable.
I just heard on MSNBC that the fence jumper made it only 10 to 15' past
the fence before the dogs got him.

Botany
(70,490 posts)But it is better that the dog gets "it" then a human.
the dogs are there to slow down a bad human. It would seem a Kevlar vest on a working dog gives more time, even if the dog is wounded, for several badasses with a whole lot of muscle, human and military to show up and stop the problem on the WH grounds
Botany
(70,490 posts)... weight of the vest would put a stress on the animal too. In the cold world of security
the dogs are a key part of the equation but they are expendable too.
From what I am hearing it was two dogs that got to the person who jumped the fence.

(13,485 posts)They are incredibly fast.. it's unbelievable. There was a video posted on this site of a dog told to attack a guy with a gun and it was over before the guy knew what hit him. If the dog is told to attack, it's usually over... they go for the throat the face the weapon... if the dogs are told or trained just to hold, they would unfortunately have a chance to get kicked or worse... but they will do what they're trained to do.
Botany
(70,490 posts).... are amazing animals ....... One place I have worked around has a
big Doberman Pinscher and his head is almost 4' off the ground. Before I
was given an introduction that dog let me know that he was fine as long
as I stayed on one side of the fence but the side "he was working" was his
world. Once the dog's owner came out and invited me in and introduced
me to "Mr. Moon" (dog's name) he was my buddy .... even to the point he
wouldn't leave me alone. The dog and I are pals now but I still know that
he has a job to guard the property, the people, the horses and the other dogs
that live there and I pity the person who would upset "his world."
I don't know if the secret service and the government still get their German
Shepards from this place but their used to be a kennel on the eastern shore
of MD or in Deleware that supplied security dogs and i got to see one of those
dogs "work" in training and a man (with protective gear) and at least 50 yds
away from the dog was taken down in seconds.
I will never understand on how last month's fence jumper got all the way
to the White House because the Secret Service had no dogs on duty.
defacto7
(13,485 posts)"I will never understand on how last month's fence jumper......."
It's hard for me to believe it was just a lax administrating of the security people. There's more going on there. I would have had dogs on as first defense without a second thought.
Botany
(70,490 posts)Fence jumpers are exactly why they have those dogs. Tonight's
guy only got 10 to 15 before the dogs got him.
But onto the Secret Service's "mistakes" and w/one time you
have random chance, and with 2 times you have really bad luck
but w/3 times you have a pattern.

(14,881 posts)I still cannot fathom my pudgy little guy's speed. He was at least 70 feet away and had turned to watch, when the lab dropped his quarters to launch at me. He never made it off the ground. I heard shrieking ( he has a very high pitched bay), saw a yellow blur, and Luna was on that dog's shoulder.
