Obama: Georgia Key to Democrats Retaining Senate

Source: NBC

In an effort to turn out Democratic voters in Georgia, President Barack Obama this week said a victory by Senate candidate Michelle Nunn will mean Democrats retain control of the Senate.

But Republicans have quickly pounced on the comments and say they are further proof that Democrats running away from the president will stand with him if elected.

“If Michelle Nunn wins, that means that Democrats keep control of the Senate, and that means we can keep on doing some good work. So it is critically important to make sure that folks vote,” Obama told Atlanta urban radio station V-103.

But Republicans have used the interview as another way to tie a Democrat running in a conservative state to the president, whose popularity continues to sag in states with key Senate races.

I will consider winning ANY of the 9 "toss up" seats to be in excess of my expectations. Giving black voters the shaft for six years straight is going to have serious consequences.

Right now I'm looking at Warner sitting on an 11-point lead in Virginia and wondering how the hell Ed Gillespie of all people has gotten within striking range of the US Senate.

http://fivethirtyeight.com/interactives/senate-forecast/

If you do the math without wishful thinking, the most likely scenario is that we win 2 or 3 of the 9 toss-ups and the GOP walks away with 52-53 seats. And that's if the election were today, with the trend on a worsening slope. I was shocked when I checked the latest polls to see that Virginia is in play - that was a 25+ point race all summer, now down to 11, and Warner hasn't made any bloopers that would explain the erosion.

This election is going to be a mirror image of the rout that Bush led the GOP into in 2006, for the same reasons - the country is tired of the President, and the President's party's base is demoralized because we've seen little to no progress, or worse, backwards movement on the big things that really matter to large numbers of voters.

The hope is gone and people no longer expect anything to change (for the better). This party is going to need a reboot, fresh faces and new ideas to be successful in the future.

hasn't done anything good and has "made things worse". However, you do not hold any Republican accountable for their continued obstruction. Had they not deliberately held this country hostage by blocking every single jobs package; every single economic stimulus package--every damn thing this president has tried to do to move this country forward, we would be in a much better situation.

But you do not point the finger anywhere near the Republicans. You do not hold them accountable for anything.

You point your finger squarely at the Black Man in the White House.

I see you, troll! You better tread lightly. Real lightly. I'm not friendly to trolls who blame Democrats but say nothing about Republicans. We don't play that here. Go back to Stormfront and Drudge!

Let's hope the poster is unduly pessimistic, but at least he cites some numbers to make his case.

And I think his political assessment is probably correct. Obama's at the midway point of his second term, the thrill is gone, not a whole lot has been accomplished, and some loyal constituencies are disappointed. It is a recipe for a crappy mid-term. That's been the case historically, too.

Yeah, it's unfair to blame Obama for Republican obstructionism, but that's how it seems to work. With the voters, I mean.

And it wasn't the poster's task to blame the Republicans. This is a discussion about who wins the mid-terms.

I think the Democrats will hold the Senate, but just barely. Look for more paralysis until 2017. Maybe by then we can accomplish a sweeping victory.

Most of this country understands only that

a) The President is a Democrat; and
b) Shit has been getting worse and worse the entire time the current President has been President.

You may wonder why any poor/middle class might vote GOP, the answer is that they voted Democrat in 2006, 2008, and 2012 and they're worse off than they were before. It's a "throw the bums out" mentality which is the Great American Tradition.

That is the extent of the political sophistication of the average voter.

I remember what Obama inherited very clearly. And I think it's because nobody talks about it. It was scary! There was talk about another Great Depression. I also remember the GOP saying they will be the "party of no"—repeatedly.
I remember the mass layoffs; the stores closings; the restaurants closing; the real estate plunge; the attempts at keeping the auto industry alive; the radio news predicting that most major stores will fold except a few;
...and you're saying it's worse now?

Because it's bullshit. The average person doesn't give a shit about "Wall Street" nor even knows what "NSA" means.

But they DO care that the gasoline and heating oil prices have dropped and they can finally get some health insurance without being denied if they have some chronic illness (which many have because they could never get covered) and can keep their grown children on it.

Libertarian "Democrats" can't seem to get out of their bubble worlds.

Which is why I call myself an independent, I have voted democrat most of my life but there is a very small difference between the two parties. In the end, not much has changed and for the people with their eyes open they can see this. Instead of fixing problems, he pumped up Wall Street with a crap load of money that will come home to roost eventually.

trying to depress the vote any way you can. Saying how bad the recovery is and how crummy Obama has been. If anyone takes a historical perspective on the "depression" that we were in it was obviously a depression. We had a bank collapse and a deflation of our property values nationwide. This happened in the great depression and that took 10 years to get over it. 280 posts says to me not a democrat but a troll.

If the media was the least bit fair this would have been explained. The media like most Americans are never took a meaningful history course.

I was a young adult during the 90s, when the republican's eviscerated Bill Clinton.

I was not as well aware as I am now, but my bullshit meter hit read listening to their spin and bullshit, and I could not comprehend how anyone would buy it.

It was baffling how anyone would consider the dumb ass, son of priviledge cause he was the guy you would have like to have a beer with while having disdain to the, you know, smart guy.

I knew it was going to be bad when dipshit got elected.

It was worse than I thought.

After almost two decades, I thought, FINALLY we are on track in 06 and 08, but 2009 was a real awkening, the pure vitriol and stupidity used to go after health care reform, and I learned a BIG lesson 2010, when for no reason other than republicans throwing a fit, this country gave them the House and seats in the senate - people in this country are, sadly, stupid on a level I could never have comprehended.

Since then, I have been much more sober, and understand that like the leadup to 06, things, sadly are going to have be REALLY bad for people in this country to not buy, hook, line and sinker, republican bullshit.

With Gov. Deal telling the voters he supports the agenda of the NRA and Koch brothers. He has no other agenda for the state or the people. Whatever the lobbyist want him to do, he supports them and has been doing that for over 20 years. Gov. Deal doesn't have the intelligence to run the state and make key decisions. He couldn't even get the snow off the highways during the winter. Gov. Deal is an old, senile man, wanting power and nothing else except being a YES man to the NRA and Koch brothers.
