Pro-West Parties, Nationalists Win Ukraine Vote
Source: Agence France-Presse
Pro-Western and nationalist parties swept Ukraine's parliamentary election Sunday, exit polls showed, in a boost for President Petro Poroshenko's anti-corruption reforms and attempts to end a war with pro-Russian rebels.
The results pointed to overwhelming consensus on Ukraine's bid to steer from Russia's orbit on a pro-Western path eventually targeting European Union membership.
The snap election came eight months after a street revolt overthrew Moscow-backed president Viktor Yanukovych, sparking conflict with Russia and a crisis in relations between the Kremlin and Ukraine's Western allies.
The polls were called to clear out the last vestiges of Yanukovych's regime -- and to some extent this was achieved.

Lets see how free and fair the those elections in the rebel areas will be. It is funny they are scared to let the people in the east vote in this election by threatening them with possible death.

(101,294 posts)Previously, the Kremlin had not made it clear whether it would recognise the vote amid the continuing violence in the east of the country, where pro-Moscow separatists have declared two independent statelets after questionable referendums held earlier this month.
The separatist authorities have said they will do everything possible to disrupt the elections, stating they do not plan to hold "the presidential elections of a neighbouring state" on their territory, and there has been a campaign of terror and intimidation against polling stations and election officials.

(59,500 posts)Not to mention, he ran on a platform of moving towards an economic relationship with the EU - that he back tracked on because Russia was against it. Not to mention, after he left his corruption became more evident.
Also, it might well be that the loss of Crimea, which was Pro-Russian means that what was close to 50/50 between western leaning and pro Russian is now leaning far more to the west - and this is more so because the rebel held areas did not allow the vote (so their seats are currently unfilled - which is possibly the best way to handle it.)

(16,974 posts)threatened to kill voters and poll workers in the east if they tried to elect their own representatives. Best they leave them unfilled and allow voting for those representatives if and when they do not threaten to kill voters.
Guess what, there was no coup. They Ukrainian government sure is not killing all of the people in the areas that have been reclaimed from the pro-Russian side. They allowed them to vote freely for their representative. That is quite unlike what is happening in the east.

The only unsavory ones eligible to join a coalition is Liashko's folks, but even they are a small minority.
The overwhelming bulk of the votes seems to be going to the moderate but clearly pro-Western blocs. Sounds like as good of a result as any.
