WARSAW, Poland (AP) Poland will move thousands of troops toward its eastern borders in a historic realignment of a military structure built in the Cold War, the country's defense minister told The Associated Press on Monday.
Tomasz Siemoniak said the troops are needed in the east because of the conflict in neighboring Ukraine.
"The geopolitical situation has changed, we have the biggest crisis of security since the Cold War and we must draw conclusions from that," Siemoniak said.
He said that at least three military bases in the east will see their populations increase from the current 30 percent of capacity to almost 90 percent by 2017, and that more military hardware will be moved to those bases as well.

I think Poland is worried about how things are in Ukraine... And therefore want to keep an eye on it...

(4,231 posts)For anybody who doesn't know about the feelings between Poland and Russia I advise that you read the history of what Russia did to Poland as Stalin played pals with Germany. Russia was needlessly savage and war crimes could well have been charged except we felt we needed Russian co-operation in Germany after the war. I have spoken to many Poles over the years and I can tell you that if Russia tries to do to Poland what they did to Ukraine we better all get ready because I seriously doubt if Poland will wait for NATO to dither around before responding. They experienced what happens when you expect the world to help you. It will be a battle to the last man, woman and child. Expect many tens of thousands of Poles from around the world to immediately flock to Poland to fight. I'm telling you that this hatred and memory runs so deep it makes Israel/Palestine look like a schoolyard fight. I know Poles in Chicago who speak of this and relive the horror every day. After all look at what the Solidarity movement did to Russian control. Russia knew better than to advance into the shipyard and annihilate the workers. As bad-ass as the Russians think they are nobody is a match for a large group of people in a fit of rage trying to claw you to death if need be.
