Sierra Leone doctor tests positive for Ebola

Source: AP-EXCITE

FREETOWN, Sierra Leone (AP) —

Authorities in Sierra Leone say another doctor there has tested positive for Ebola, marking a setback for efforts to keep desperately needed health care workers safe.

Government Chief Medical Officer Dr. Brima Kargbo confirmed on Sunday that a fifth doctor has tested positive. The other four all have died from the virus that has killed nearly 5,000 across West Africa.

The sick physician has been identified as Dr. Godfrey George, medical superintendent of Kambia Government Hospital in northern Sierra Leone. He was driven to the capital of Freetown after reporting he wasn't feeling well.

Doctors and nurses have been the most vulnerable to contracting Ebola, as the virus is spread through bodily fluids. Some 523 health workers have contracted Ebola, and about half of them have died.

are the true heroes of this world. They have their fingers in the holes in the dike and they are paying and will pay the price. If every fucking billionaire in the world gave 1/10 of their usually ill gotten gains to this fight, we could eradicate this disease. I think.

We've been very successful at treating this virus and I think that healthcare workers of all nationalities should be brought here immediately for treatment. Or does that make too much sense?

am greatly surprised as to the small percentage of their population that has contracted Ebola. Years of tribal and Governmental Wars and dislocation funded by outside sources to control the mineral wealth of this region with total disregard as to health or wealth of the populace. There isn't any excuse for the world not helping fix a mess created by outsiders. Got to wonder what the real agenda of the right wing idiots when it comes Ebola other than a election year wedge. They could give a flying F--- about Black Africans.

Ebola isn't a waterborne illness. Those getting it are getting directly from another infected person. Officials recently said the virus would become 70% fatal because there aren't enough beds, doctors, nurses, equipment, etc., to effectively treat all who contract it in the three countries suffering so badly.

also includes the disposal of infectious waste and dead bodies, as well as the *cleaning* of equipment (which presupposes an adequate supply of bleach), so yes, in a very real sense, sanitation IS a problem.
