NEW YORK (AP) Voters in Oregon and the District of Columbia approved ballot measures Tuesday allowing the use of marijuana by adults, elating legalization activists who hope to extend their winning streak across the country.
Oregon will join the company of Colorado and Washington state, where voters approved the recreational use of pot two years ago. And the District of Columbia is on the same path unless Congress, which has review power, blocks the move.
Still to come were results from Alaska, which also had a marijuana-legalization measure on its ballot Tuesday.
Other volatile issues on state ballots include gambling and abortion. Two competing measures in Washington state gave voters a choice on whether to expand background checks for gun sales.

(25,183 posts)About 75% of the population in Oregon lives within an hour's drive of Washington. Clearly, voters figured out that there was a lot of tax money going to WA because of this.

(8,677 posts)I could give a shit about legal pot...the rethugs are going to spin the drug war back up (more money for the corporate masters) and push the executive branch to enforce drug laws on the books (they will beat him in the press and in the committees till he gives in). State laws don't mean shit if you can't change federal laws. The Dems are officially out in the cold. For a very long time. Smoke 'em while you got 'em....cause it isn't going to last much longer.

(4,775 posts)Let them try, if the Repubs want their prohibition badly enough, it will hurt them at the polls, too many people have seen the light on this issue. Obama needs to side with us not with them.
