North Korea releases American detainees Bae, Miller
Source: CNN
Americans Kenneth Bae and Matthew Todd Miller have been allowed to leave North Korea -- where they had been detained -- "and are on their way home," the Office of the U.S. Director of National Intelligence announced Saturday.
The DNI's office said that the U.S. government is facilitating the two men's return home, though it was not immediately clear when they would arrive back in the United States.
"We welcome (North Korea's decision to release both Mr. Bae and Mr. Miller," the office said in a statement. "We want to thank our international partners, especially ... the government of Sweden, for their tireless efforts to help secure their release."

(18,868 posts)I still don't understand why anyone in their right mind would visit there in the first place. But I'm glad they are out of there. Glad for their families.

(47,479 posts)I think that the government should issue a strong warning that if an American citizen is even withing half a mile of North Korea, or Iran, and is being kidnapped, then he is on his own.
First we had the two reporters from the Al Gore network that were releases after the humiliation visit by Bill Clinton. Then a few weeks ago, we had to send an American aircraft within a time frame dictated by the Koreans to take a visitor home who knew he was violated the rules by living a bible laying around. And now, we don't know yet what conditions were set.
One of them was a legitimate tourist, the other, a freek who tore his passport upon arrival.

(2,749 posts)Bible-thumping morons. I would be tempted to say leave them there, only I don't believe any human should be forced to be in North Korea under the current circumstances. And I'm not sure time in a NK prison is punishment enough for pulling such a colossally stupid stunt. I want them to say publically that they screwed up big time and admit they should not have gone there. I won't hold my breath though. These "Christians" totally suck.

(22,000 posts)They went in to North Korea to provoke the government. It is the same thing as poking a injured animal, you are going to get bitten. Every time we have to go in after these people the focus is taken away from what we SHOULD be doing. The State Department needs to change their policy and say those who chose to go into North Korea for provocative reasons do so at their own risk and will NOT receive help from the US Government. That way when the family comes crying that they need help, we can say "tough shit".
