Israeli Arabs Protest After Deadly Police Shooting

Source: Associated Press

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) -- Thousands of Israeli Arabs took to the streets Saturday in an angry protest after video footage showed police fatally shooting a 22-year-old Arab who appeared to be retreating when he was shot dead.

Dozens burned tires and hurled rocks and firebombs toward police on major highways in northern Israel, with some waving Palestinian flags and calling for a violent uprising against the state. Police said there were a series of violent outbursts throughout the country, including one in which two people were slightly injured by a stone thrown at a bus that shattered its window.

Outraged by the police shooting, Arab community leaders in Israel called for a strike Sunday and planned to continue protests. Police said they would increase deployment to prevent further outbursts. The tensions in the north come in addition to those in Jerusalem where Palestinians from the eastern part of the city have been clashing almost daily with police over access to a shrine holy to both Jews and Muslims.

Saturday's anger erupted after an early morning incident in the Arab village of Kfar Kana in northern Israel. Police said officers opened fire against a knife-wielding man attempting to stab policemen. Unknown-sourced footage later appeared to portray a different story. The grainy security camera material showed a man repeatedly banging on the window of a police vehicle. When officers emerged to confront him, he began to backpedal and was then shot. Police evacuated him to hospital where he died.

unnecessary shootings in Israel. That kid was leaving. He was NOT an immediate threat to those with guns. This is murder.

The guy with the knife was VERY aggressive prior to the cops getting out of the car.

He did back away once they got out, but he was turned partly toward them, and it's not much of a stretch to think he might have been ready to attack.

What police agency is trained to do that to a wounded suspect?

None.

On edit - It may be standard for Israeli police to treat people this way (like dragging a body along the ground, and hightailing it out of there). In this country we expect corpses to be treated with respect, but I don't think Israelis hold any respect for their Arab brethren.

They may have killed him by treating him that way after the shooting rather than letting an EMT attend him.

we dragged wounded insurgents across the ground to where our medics were....

A. Our gear is heavy as shit and we are not taking it off to pick up a wounded insurgent
B. There could be other attacks in the area, grabbing them and dragging them is a way to get them out of the area quickly
C. They were just trying to kill us, we are going to treat their wounds, but we don't have to like it.

Maybe go back to school?

and the victim was banging on the door of the van with a knife in his hand. However when the police exited, he turned and ran which not longer made him an immediate threat. The police immediately killed him, which would make it at least a manslaughter crime. Unfortunately, the policeman will probably be exonerated.

And I would have decided that before I even got out of the vehicle. They were under attack and then the guy was backing away and then they shot. I don't think there was enough time for them to shift their assessment of what to do.

But I just like to look at things objectively.

For the Arab Israelis, this may have just been the match that lit a tinder box. If the police there are anything like their military counterparts, they are brutal beasts. So if their actions in that instance didn't merit the riots to follow, I expect many past actions did, and led to this burst of anger.
