Pope Looks To Destigmatize Autism

By SHAUN HEASLEY
November 18, 2014

Pope Francis will spend time Saturday with people with autism and their families as part of an international autism conference put on by the Vatican’s health care office. (Zuma Press/TNS)

For the first time, Pope Francis is set to meet with individuals with autism and their families during an international conference on the developmental disorder.

The pope will meet with families on Saturday, the Vatican said.

The gathering, which will include prayer and song, will cap a three-day conference put on by the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Health Care Workers that officials indicated will bring together more than 650 people from 57 countries.

Organizers said their aim is to “help break the isolation and, in many cases, the stigma” experienced by people with autism and their families.

Greater awareness and understanding of autism needed, says UN chief

2 April 2010 – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon marked World Autism Awareness Day today by appealing for stepped-up understanding of the disability that affects millions worldwide.

Autism, which affects people all around the globe, impedes the ability to communicate and develop social relationships, and is often accompanied by extreme behavioural challenges. Estimates vary, but it is believed that up to nearly 70 million worldwide are afflicted with the disability.

Autism affects 70 million people worldwide

NEW YORK - The Bangladeshi permanent representative to the United Nations, Abdul Momen, on Tuesday called on the international community to mitigate its global health, social, and economic strategy to help the 70 million people affected by Autism around the world.

Since 2002, the complex developmental brain disorder has grown by 57 percent and inflicted "one out of 88 children and 1 in 54 boys," he said.

"Boys are four times more likely than girls to have autism," Momen said at a UN panel discussion to mark the World Autism Awareness Day, which was observed annually on April 2.

"Autism is the fastest growing serious developmental disability and since 2002 its growth rate is around 57 percent," he said.

Autism affects approximately one percent of the world population according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and is described as "complex developmental brain disorders -- autism spectrum disorders -- caused by a combination of genes and environmental influences," a UN press released said here.

For some parents of autistic children, Jerry Seinfeld’s self-diagnosis was ‘a slap in the face’
By Peter Holley November 12

When Kim Stagliano saw an "NBC Nightly News" clip of Jerry Seinfeld saying he’s on the autism spectrum, the first thing she did was get angry.

The next thing she did was get on Twitter.

https://twitter.com/KimStagliano/status/530761896220434432/photo/1

https://twitter.com/KimStagliano/status/530763059938459648/photo/1

Some might label her reaction a “rage spiral,” but Stagliano, whose three teenage girls have autism, is not about to apologize. Like many parents of autistic children, Stagliano — the managing editor of the Age of Autism, which covers autism news — said she’s grown tired of people, particularly those in the public spotlight, making autistic symptoms sound fashionable.

Seinfeld publicly retracted his self-diagnosis on national TV this week. And I would like to thank him for doing so. I'd also like to thank him for opening up the conversation about the Spectrum in general. We've seen lots of opinions of what it means to have autism.

Those of us with severely affected kids see the difficulties of being a special needs person who has accommodations in all areas of life and for whom guardianship or some sort of conservatorship is the future. Or the present.

Others have children whose autism affects them differently. They are not as disabled, but still have significant challenges not to be dimissed.

And we heard from adults for whom autism is part of who they are, despite the challenges it has brought them.

Valid.

Valid.

Valid.

Not every voice was polite. Comments and Tweets were heated. So what? That's how we learn and grow. The epidemic of people with autism is growing into adulthood. My own daughter turns 20 next month, with her sisters close on her heels. We need to accept my daughters where they are on the spectrum. And your kids where they are. And adults where they may be...

Kim Stagliano is Managing Editor of Age of Autism. Her new novel, House of Cards; A Kat Cavicchio romantic suspense is available from Amazon in all e-formats now. Her memoir, All I Can Handle I'm No Mother Teresa is available in hardcover, paperback and e-book.

http://autisticadvocacy.org/2014/01/2013-joint-letter-to-the-sponsors-of-autism-speaks/

Autism Speaks’ senior leadership fails to include a single autistic person. Unlike non-profits focused on intellectual disability, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and countless other disabilities, Autism Speaks systematically excludes autistic adults from its board of directors, leadership team and other positions of senior leadership. This exclusion has been the subject of numerous discussions with and eventually protests against Autism Speaks, yet the organization persists in its refusal to allow those it purports to serve into positions of meaningful authority within its ranks. The slogan of the disability rights movement has long been, “Nothing About Us, Without Us.” Almost nine years after its founding, Autism Speaks continues to refuse to abide by this basic tenet of the mainstream disability community.

Autism Speaks has a history of supporting dangerous fringe movements that threaten the lives and safety of both the autism community and the general public. The anti-vaccine sentiments of Autism Speaks’ founders have been well documented in the mainstream media. Several of Autism Speaks’ senior leaders have resigned or been fired after founders Bob and Suzanne Wright overruled Autism Speaks’ scientific leadership in order to advance the discredited idea that autism is the result of vaccinations. Furthermore, Autism Speaks has promoted the Judge Rotenberg Center, a Massachusetts facility under Department of Justice and FDA investigation for the use of painful electric shock against its students. The Judge Rotenberg Center’s methods have been deemed torture by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture (p. 84) and are currently the subject of efforts by the Massachusetts state government and disability rights advocates to shut the facility down. Despite this, Autism Speaks has allowed the Judge Rotenberg Center to recruit new admissions from families seeking resources at their fundraising walks. We believe this is not the type of action you anticipated when you agreed to provide support to Autism Speaks events....

Autism Speaks’ advertising depends on offensive and outdated rhetoric of fear and pity, presenting the lives of autistic people as tragic burdens on our families and society. In its advertising, Autism Speaks has compared being autistic to being kidnapped, dying of a natural disaster, having a fatal disease, and countless other inappropriate analogies. In one of its most prominent fundraising videos, an Autism Speaks executive stated that she had considered placing her child in the car and driving off the George Washington Bridge, going on to say that she did not do so only because she had a normal child as well. Autism Speaks advertisements have cited inaccurate statistics on elevated divorce rates for parents of autistic children and many other falsehoods designed to present the lives of autistic children and adults as little more than tragedies.

Autism Speaks’ only advisory board member on the autism spectrum, John Elder Robison, announced his resignation from the organization this month in protest of the organization comparing autistic people to kidnapping victims and claiming that our families are not living, but merely existing, due to the horror of having autistic people in their lives. In his resignation letter, he discusses his four years spent attempting to reform the organization from the inside without success, stating, “Autism Speaks says it’s the advocacy group for people with autism and their families. It’s not, despite having had many chances to become that voice. Autism Speaks is the only major medical or mental health nonprofit whose legitimacy is constantly challenged by a large percentage of the people affected by the condition they target.”

It's a sufficiently disabling condition that no added stigma is needed or experienced (one hasn't got time or energy to notice any "stigma", in our experience).

Autism conference puts focus on families

BY LAURA IERACI
Catholic News Service

November 18th, 2014

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Caring for people with autism spectrum disorders is caring for families, said Archbishop Zygmunt Zimowski, president of the Pontifical Council for Health Care Ministry.

“Autism spectrum disorders affect families, not just the person who has the illness,” the archbishop told reporters at the Vatican Nov. 18 as he introduced a Nov. 20-22 interdisciplinary conference for health care workers, caregivers and ministers.

Coinciding with the conference, Pope Francis was expected to have his first official audience with people with ASD and their families in the Vatican audience hall Nov. 22. Conference participants and professionals who work in the field of ASD were expected to be present as well.

The meeting with the pope was expected to include a moment of prayer, but also music because, organizers said, the festive spirit of the encounter would facilitate the participation of people with ASD.

The disorders include autism, Asperger’s syndrome and Rett syndrome, which create difficulties for people in the areas of social interaction and communication, though with varying degrees, ranging from mild to debilitating severity.

The Vatican conference, under the theme “The Person with Autism Spectrum Disorders: Animating Hope,” was designed to bring together international experts in the areas of medicine, psychology, family life and pastoral care. The main topics included epidemiology, health care policy, and advances in research, prevention, pharmacology and various therapies, as well as educational, theological and pastoral approaches. More than 700 participants from 57 countries had registered.

Pope to meet with autistic kids to end stigma

VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis will meet with autistic children and their families in a bid to help raise awareness and end the stigma and isolation of people living with autism spectrum disorders.

The Saturday audience will cap an international conference on autism being hosted this week by the Vatican's health care office. Organizers said Tuesday it was the biggest medical conference of its kind on autism, gathering more than 650 experts from 57 countries.

<>

While autism is increasingly diagnosed in places like the United States, where about 1 in 68 children are said to be on the spectrum, it is still largely unknown and undiagnosed elsewhere, including in the Vatican's own backyard of Italy, said Dr. Stefano Vicari, head of pediatric neuropsychiatry at the Vatican-owned Bambin Gesu hospital in Rome.

Francis, who has shown great ease around children with special needs, will deliver a speech to the hundreds gathered in the Vatican audience hall. The session will be punctuated by music and movement for the children.

Autism experts said parents of autistic children require particular pastoral care since they are at high risk of getting divorced due to the emotional and financial stress of dealing with their child's disorder.

The Vatican's top health official, Monsignor Zygmunt Zimowski, said his office chose to focus on autism for its conference this year to give families affected by autism hope and attention.

Some of the Methodist churches in the US are actually doing something, like having Sunday School programs, summer camps, etc for children and adults with autism and other disabilities. They have highly qualified teachers and aides so the parents can attend worship. It also gives the disabled a chance to socialize with others outside their school or group home.

Don't get me wrong: I'm glad he's using the words "autism". But it's all pretty worthless to the families until action is taken. Stop talking and do something.

We've come so far, but it feels like so many factions want to re-invent the proverbial wheel on some issues. Far too often conferences are held then action plans are tabled for further study.

Like I said before, leadership of any group needs to get moving. So what if it isn't perfect, as long as it's safe. People can't wait for more administrative paperwork. They need help NOW.

... it's a disease of expectations, not a disease of the autistic or autistic spectrum individual, but a disease of society in general.

When society tries to hammer a big square peg into a small round hole, both the peg and the hole are going to be damaged.

If we, as a society, could create in every community safe secure gentle places for everyone to simply *BE* it would greatly reduce the stress on us all, not just the autistic.

What we do now is unacceptable. We warehouse "non-productive" people in prisons or wretched institutions, we cast them out among the homeless and addicts, or we force the entire burden of caring for socially "dysfunctional" people upon their families, often past a family's breaking point.

Nature dishes out a lot of random shit. If a person, child or adult, requires full time care, supervision, and/or guidance, it's basic humanity for a community to provide that. It's disgusting that our bizarre ideology of economic productivity, which is destroying the natural environment that supports us ALL, labels certain people "unproductive" and treats them and their caregivers so poorly.

Science is moving fast toward a prenatal diagnosis of autism, which (whether Jenny McCarthy wants to believe it or not) has a major genetic factor. 90% of amniocentesis procedures that lead to a diagnosis of Down syndrome later result in abortion. The pope, being Catholic, obviously does not like abortion period, so he's joined with some strange bedfellows in the "autism pride" community. These are fringe radical activists who gather on sites like Wrong Planet and Aspies for Freedom, who want a serious developmental disorder and birth defect recategorized as something along the lines of a "neurological orientation" or a "unique way of viewing the world." They liken their philosophy to that of gay-rights activists, who successfully mobilized to have homosexuality removed as a mental disorder from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) by the American Psychological/Psychiatric Association (APA). The major difference is that sexual orientation is not a debilitating birth defect that leads to mental retardation and/or major social deficits that, because they are biologically based in the brain, are impossible to overcome.

So-called "aspies for freedom" are hugely opposed to prenatal diagnosis of autism for fear it could lead to an "autism holocaust." They fear that a "way of life" will be extinguished if mass numbers of mothers decide that a life raising a severely developmentally disabled child is too much for them, and decide to abort. They are therefore squarely in the "anti-abortion but just for me, because I wouldn't exist and I'm special" camp. They view themselves as some sort of cultural preservationists, like the "deaf radicals" who refuse to get cochlear implants for their deaf babies because it would mean "conforming" to "hearing culture." So-called autistic self-advocates, despite not wanting to be pathologized as "different," nevertheless place a division between themselves (the misunderstood misfits) and so-called "neurotypicals" (who just don't understand how totally awesome they are), in the same way as deaf-radicals resent the supposed impositions placed upon them by "the hearing world." This kind of in-group language and divisive identity politics serves no purpose whatsoever to progress toward diminishing this widespread epidemic -- 70 million, I believe, was the number of cases listed in above postings, with untold numbers of undiagnosed potentials, including possibly many adults -- and serves only to advance the radical and inadvisable cause of normalizing that which is abnormal and defective. It's a cult mentality propagated over the Internet.

No one balks at finding a cure for cancer or laments the loss of a "cancer culture." No one objects to the choice of a mother who has just found out she has the BRCA gene to abort rather than give birth to a child who will also be a carrier for breast cancer. Nobody says what a tragedy it would be to find a cure for other genetic illnesses such as Tay-Sachs or Type 1 Diabetes. Yet for some reason once we start talking about diseases of the mind, they become diseases of the "self," and getting rid of autism (or deafness) in our lifetime is tantamount to the genocide of Native Americans and the colonial destruction of their language. The fact that they liken racial genocide and the eradication of Cherokee language, to the "destruction" of sign language or emoticons, "speaks" volumes about how socially clueless these fringe activists truly are.

Autism is not a race. It's not an ethnicity, it's not a religion and it's not a sexual orientation. It is a serious developmental disorder and genetic birth defect that causes untold problems for the afflicted as well as his or her caregiver(s) and the community at large. Pope Francis is merely playing to the radical fringe that opposes abortion in cases where a prenatal diagnosis of autism might be found, to advance the ridiculous and outmoded Catholic cause of restricting abortion for any purpose whatsoever. I don't really care about what the fringe thinks. There are people who are morbidly obese who view themselves not as sick but as "big and beautiful." There are people with anorexia and bulimia who view their disorder as a "lifestyle choice." And yes, there are autistics who are so sick and delusional that they view their illness not as a defect but a "way of being," and some who even consider it a "gift." People with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and other severe mental illnesses, who are perfectly content to not only take pride in their disorder, but to pass it on genetically to their offspring, knowing full well the repercussions those children will face.

You also have the obligatory strawman coming from these folks whenever, like Seinfeld, a "famous and successful person" is revealed to have, or thought to have, this terrible and complex illness: "would you abort Jerry Seinfeld" or "would you abort Beethoven" or the more often-used "would you abort Einstein." Not that I will ever get pregnant, but yes I would. Yes because the chances of the garden-variety special needs student who can recite pi to a million digits but can't look you in the eye, who has no interest in going to college because he's convinced he's going to become a Pokemon master, or who has no interests along the lines of his peers but can recite the names of every single U.S. president, in order, from Washington to Obama, and comes home with a black eye and a need of stitches because he got beat up for being a nerd, of becoming a famous standup comedian, a great composer, or a prize-winning physicist, are slim and nil. The chances of anyone becoming Jerry Seinfeld, Beethoven, or Einstein are slim and nil, never mind someone who can't tie his shoes and is obsessed with Japanese cartoons.

Plus, as we've already seen so tragically before, some autistics get so obsessed with the wrong things that they take out their "meltdowns" with an automatic rifle on their mother and 26 elementary school children, or scads of women who turned him down for being an obnoxious computer nerd who believed he was "entitled" to sex because he was "trying so hard." Would I abort Adam Lanza or Elliott Rodger? You better fucking believe I would.

Francis is fooling nobody with his appeal to the fringe optimists. He wants an end to abortion and genetic science just like the wacky special snowflakes at Wrong Planet, and he's using "god's love for the autistic" as just one more excuse. I say no. Let science progress without input from the loony tunes, and let's move forward to finding prevention and hopefully a cure.

When I first read this yesterday I had to walk away. You're spoofing here, right? If not, your post is monstrous and you've come to the right place to learn. Maybe. Time will tell.

Hate speech is, outside the law, speech that attacks a person or group on the basis of attributes such as gender, ethnic origin, religion, race, disability, or sexual orientation."

The post conflates horrific gun violence with autism before advocating for abortion. That constitutes hate speech, IMO. A DU jury disagreed 2-5.

The issue here isn't the unborn, it's the born. Also this isn't something new. Catholic parishes have been helping parents organize religious education for autistic individuals including communions and confirmations for decades. And Jesuit colleges have been turning out well-regarded special ed. teachers for at least as long. I know a few and they're great teachers, in some cases administrators, who love their students. This is the first I've heard of this conference, so you know what I know, but from what's been posted the goal appears to be to give families of autistic individuals a little recognition and encouragement. I know a few of those too, and I'm certain this will lift their spirits. It's a tough job and they didn't ask for it.

p.s. just looked over the program and there's a lot more going on here than encouragement to families. It seems like a serious effort to come to terms with a problematic medical phenomenon.

Vatican-sponsored conference on autism opens

20/11/2014 12:41

(Vatican Radio) The Pontifical Council for Pastoral Health Care is sponsoring a three-day conference this week on autism. The theme of the event is: The Person with Autism Spectrum Disorders: Animating Hope. The conference is to bring together 650 experts from 57 countries to discuss a broad array of topics connected with the disease and its treatment, including diagnosis, treatment, research, and social solidarity with sufferers and their families.

<>

Bob Wright told Vatican Radio that the Vatican-organized gathering is an example of the kind of contribution that religion can make to the common good. “I am so proud to be here at the Vatican, where the (Pastoral Health Care dicastery) is taking three days away from its other activities to have all kinds of scientists come in and talk about autism, about family, about getting together and making things happen – when we have other people using religion for money, for corruption, for terrorism, for horrible things, this example of the Vatican [shows] the right way to be spiritual and (religious).” he said. His wife and co-founder, Suzanne Wright, expanded on the point. “The religion aspect and the spiritual aspect to me is very helpful,” she said, adding, “we need to show compassion and understanding in taking care of (those with autism).”

Genuine care and compassion were the central themes of Pope Francis’ recent remarks to Catholic doctors in Italy. “The dominant thinking,” he said, “sometimes suggests a ‘false compassion’, that which believes that it is: helpful to women to promote abortion; an act of dignity to obtain euthanasia; a scientific breakthrough to ‘produce’ a child and to consider it to be a right rather than a gift to welcome; or to use human lives as guinea pigs presumably to save others.” He went on to say, “Attention to human life, especially that in greatest difficulty.” The Holy Father also said, “There is no human life that is more sacred than another – every human life is sacred.”

An estimated 70 million people worldwide are living with autism and autism-spectrum disorders.

37. How Recent Is Autism? Vivian Murdock, oldest child in the first case study on autism, born 9.13.31.

How Recent Is Autism?

So recent that the late great director Mike Nichols, born 11.6.31, was just a few weeks younger than Vivian Murdock, oldest child in the first case study on autism, born 9.13.31. ASSERTION: Autism is man-made.

ASIDE: See post 11 (above) for recent Washington Post link referencing Age of Autism website.

http://www.ageofautism.com/2014/11/age-of-autism-weekly-wrap-.html#more

When Mike Nichols died Thursday, I noticed that he was born in 1931, the same year that autism began (in the person of Vivian Murdock, oldest child in Leo Kanner’s case series from 1943, whom Teresa Conrick, Mark Blaxill and I first identified on AOA – an example, come to think of it, of what financial support helps accomplish).

When I learn about other people born then, it reminds me how recent autism is – within the span of one lifetime, this catastrophe has descended upon us. The reason, we believe, is the first use of ethylmercury in commercial compounds starting then, including in vaccines as thimerosal.

So I wrote a brief note about the coincidence of birth year, as I often do (it’s still up there in the right hand corner). Then, reading his obit in the Times on Friday morning, I came across this: “Young Michael’s sense of being a stranger in a strange land [a Holocaust refugee from Germany] was aggravated by the loss of his hair at age 4, the result of a reaction to an inoculation for whooping cough.” That’s called alopecia. He would have gotten the shot in Germany. That nice head of blond hair, it turns out, was a toupee.

Well, then. A vaccine caused him a severe reaction in 1935 or 1936. I assume that the vaccine – pertussis, later to become the worst part of the deadly and damaging DPT -- contained thimerosal. (Remember, Asperger’s was showing up in neighboring Austria then. Bayer, which used ethylmercury in pesticides, was based there.)

Here’s a counterfactual exercise. What if, instead of musing about bad parenting, Leo Kanner had realized the toxic exposure in autism, just as Mike Nichol’s doctors did in alopecia, and the Age of Autism had been stopped as soon as it started?

"The first child diagnosed with autism was born in 1931. We discovered that her name was Vivian Murdock and that she was born in Baltimore...

Twelve years later in 1943 a psychiatrist at JHU in Baltimore named Leo Kanner wrote a report titled "Autistic Disturbances of Affective Contact" that began with these words, "Since 1938, there have come to our attention a number of children whose condition differs so markedly and uniquely from anything reported so far, that each case merits - and, I hope, will eventually receive - a detailed consideration of its fascinating peculiarities."

Elsewhere he called it "a behavior pattern not known to me or anyone else theretofore." In other words, autism as it came to be known was new and remarkable and hard to miss and no one had ever seen it before. Now in this report Leo Kanner identified 11 children he studied, all of whom were born in the 1930s, although only by first name and last initial. Working together over the past 8 years, we have now been able to uncover the real identity of 8 of these children and their families..."

47. Autism in my own family goes back a lot further than that.
Mon Nov 24, 2014, 01:41 PM
Nov 2014

There are many semi-functional and entirely dysfunctional autistic spectrum people in my family tree.

Autism, Aspergers, etc., were simply not identified yet. In any case, Autism is probably not one "thing."

In my case it's clearly genetic. The dice rolls as:

don't have symptoms / dysfunctional or semi-functional in this society / eccentric science-engineer-artist type.

Symptoms called "autism" might have other causes too, including the usual suspects of environmental toxins like lead, mercury, insecticides, and pathogens.

Attributing autism to a specific environmental or genetic factor doesn't make any sense at this point. These conspiracy theories are not helpful to anyone on the autistic spectrum. Do the actual science, or shut up. Ask autistic spectrum people what they need, and what they think.

Our society is much more open now to discussions about mental illness, and mental differences. In the bad-old-days anyone who was dysfunctional in so-called "normal" society was cast out to fend for themselves on the streets, institutionalized, imprisoned, subject to violent and unethical crackpot "therapies," or quietly supported by their extended family.

But nobody talked about it, and when they did, the talk was nasty and very similar to how LGBT people are treated.

When I was a kid people, even some doctors, blamed my asthma, my skinniness, my clumsiness and social awkwardness, my Asperger eccentricities, on my mom. She was a poor parent they implied or explicitly stated, otherwise I wouldn't be such a problem. Fortunately my parents are awesome and didn't buy into any of that. I was relatively safe at home and protected from the bullshit superstitions, harsh judgments, and fears of ordinary society.

I've also experienced some incredible advancements in medicine over the years. As a kid and young adult I was a frequent flier to the ER. (Fortunately my dad had good union health insurance!) Mostly related to asthma and subsequent bronchitis or pneumonia, but sometimes for autistic spectrum misadventures. By the early 'eighties meds had improved enough to keep me out of that kind of trouble.

Pope meets with autistic children

By PAOLO LUCARIELLO

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis tenderly embraced children with autism spectrum disorders, some of whom avoided meeting his gaze, during an audience Saturday aimed at offering solidarity to people living with the condition.

The pope urged governments and institutions to respond to the needs of people with autism to help break "the isolation and, in many cases also the stigma" associated with the disorders, which are characterized by varying levels of social impairment and communication difficulties.

"It is necessary the commitment of everyone, in order to promote encounters and solidarity, in a concrete action of support and renewed promotion of hope," the pontiff said.

After offering a prayer, Francis greeting the young children and teens with autism and their families, kissing the children and cupping their faces in his hands as he circulated the auditorium at the Vatican. Some appeared to avoid the pope's eyes, while one teen whom the pope had greeted followed the pontiff and gave him another hug from behind.

Families of children affected with autism were touched by the pope's words.

"It was an explosion of emotions," said Maria Cristina Fiordi, a mother of a child with autism. "For us, we are parents of a child affected with autism, this meeting was very important. It was as an outstretched hand through a problem that is very often not considered in the right way."

Franco Di Vincenzo, another parent of a child with autism, said he took strength from the pope's call not to hide, "that we should live with this problem in serenity."

Pope: break down the stigma burdening those with autism

“Everyone should be committed to promoting acceptance, encounter and solidarity through concrete support and by encouraging renewed hope,” he told participants in his Nov. 22 audience with autistic persons and their families.

Through this support, he said, “we can contribute to breaking down the isolation and, in many cases, the stigma burdening people with autism spectrum disorders, and just as often their families.”

Pope Francis addressed participants in a conference organized by the Pontifical Council for Health Care to discuss the topic of autism spectrum disorders.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder, manifesting within the first three years of life. It is characterized by impaired social interaction, as well as impaired verbal and non-verbal communication.

The congress, titled “The Person with Autism Spectrum Disorders: Animating Hope,” drew 650 experts from 57 countries around the world to talk about the broad array of topics related to the disease and its treatment.

In his address, Pope Francis said that persons affected by autism spectrum disorders represent “an area that appeals to the direct responsibility of governments and institutions, without of course forgetting the responsibility of Christian communities.”

He encouraged everyone to play their part in constructing a culture of encounter and solidarity in which no one affected by the disease, including their families, are left isolated.

The Pope stressed the importance of accompanying autistic persons and their families in a personal way by listening to their needs, which “arise from the depths of a pathology which, all too often, struggles to be properly diagnosed and accepted without shame or withdrawing into solitude.”

Pope Francis advocated for the creation of an “on the ground” network of support and services that are both comprehensive and accessible for persons affected by autism spectrum disorders.

These services, he said, should not only involve the parents of persons with autism spectrum disorders, but also grandparents, friends, therapists, educators and pastoral workers.

By their involvement, these people can “help families overcome the feelings, which can sometimes arise, of inadequacy, uselessness and frustration.”

The Roman Pontiff thanked the families and associations who are already doing much, as well as those who offered their testimonies during the conference.

“Moreover, I want to encourage the hard work of academics and researchers, so that they may discover therapies and support tools, to help and heal and, above all, prevent the onset of these conditions as soon as possible.”

In addition to his previous appeals, the Bishop of Rome encouraged everyone to respect and give attention to the rights of the patients, as well as their needs and potential, so that the dignity of each person might be safeguarded.

He closed his audience with prayers for all who are sick, for their caretakers and for all health care workers, before invoking the protection of the Virgin Mary.

Catholics must help to break down the isolation and stigma that surrounds people with autism spectrum disorder, Francis has said.

The Pope made the comments in an address to hundreds of parents and children affected by autism in the Paul VI Audience Hall at the Vatican on Saturday.

He appealed for the creation of “a network of support and services” to assist people on the autism spectrum.

According to a Vatican Radio transcript, the Pontiff said: “Everyone should be committed to promoting acceptance, encounter and solidarity through concrete support and by encouraging renewed hope. In this way we can contribute to breaking down the isolation and, in many cases, the stigma burdening people with autism spectrum disorders, and just as often their families.

Pope: Break down isolation, stigma of Autism

<>

650 experts from 57 countries were joined in the Paul VI hall Saturday by hundreds of parents and children affected by autism. Warmly thanking them for their ‘moving and meaningful testimonies’ on what it means to live with the condition, Pope Francis spoke of the fragility of children and families suffering from autism spectrum disorders, describing the stigma and isolation they feel as a Cross.

To meet their needs and break through their loneliness, the Pope spoke of creating a network of support and services on the ground that are comprehensive and accessible. This is the responsibility of governments and intuitions he said but also of Christian communities, parishes and friends. This continued the Pope would help families overcome the feelings, that can sometimes arise, of inadequacy, uselessness and frustration when faced with the daily realities of autism.

Pope Francis concluded with words of encouragement for academics and researchers in the field that they may discover therapies and support tools, to help and heal and, above all, prevent the onset of these conditions as soon as possible. While always safeguarding the inalienable dignity of every person.

Below a Vatican Radio translation of the Holy Father’s address:

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Thank you for your welcome!

I am happy to welcome you at the end of your XXIX International Conference organized by the Pontifical Council for Pastoral Health Care, which I thank for wanting to realize such a commendable and relevant initiative, dedicated to the complex issue of autism spectrum disorders.

I warmly greet all of you who have come to take part in this meeting, which focused on prayer and testimony, together with people who are affected by autism spectrum disorders, their families and specialized associations.

These conditions constitute a fragility that affects numerous children and, consequently, their families. They represent an area that appeal to the direct responsibility of governments and institutions, without of course forgetting the responsibility of Christian communities.

Everyone should be committed to promoting acceptance, encounter and solidarity through concrete support and by encouraging renewed hope. In this way we can contribute to breaking down the isolation and, in many cases, the stigma burdening people with autism spectrum disorders, and just as often their families.

This must not be an anonymous or impersonal accompaniment, but one of listening to the profound needs that arise from the depths of a pathology which, all too often, struggles to be properly diagnosed and accepted without shame or withdrawing into solitude, especially for families. It is a Cross.

Assistance to people affected by autism spectrum disorders would benefit greatly from the creation of a network of support and services on the ground that are comprehensive and accessible. These should involve, in addition to parents, grandparents, friends, therapists, educators and pastoral workers. These figures can help families overcome the feelings, that can sometimes arise, of inadequacy, uselessness and frustration.

For this very reason, I thank the families, parish groups and various associations present here today and from whom we heard these moving and meaningful testimonies, for the work they carry out every day. I extend to all of them my personal gratitude and that of the whole Church.

Moreover, I want to encourage the hard work of academics and researchers, so that they may discover therapies and support tools, to help and heal and, above all, prevent the onset of these conditions as soon as possible. All of this while paying due attention to the rights of the patients, their needs and their potential, always safeguarding the dignity of every person.

Dear brothers and sisters, I entrust you all to the protection of the Virgin Mary, and I thank you for your prayers. Now, all together, let us pray to the Blessed Virgin Mary for all health care workers, for the sick, and then receive the blessing. Hail Mary ...
