Secret Service Arrests Man Outside White House

WASHINGTON — The Secret Service arrested an Iowa man outside the White House on Wednesday. The man, who had a hunting rifle and ammunition in his car, said he had driven to Washington because someone had told him to go to the White House, according to law enforcement officials.

Renae Kapheim, 41, of Davenport, Iowa, approached uniformed Secret Service officers on foot at 15th and E Streets, a block from the White House, at 12:54 p.m., according to the officials.

“He said that someone had told him that he should come to the White House so he had driven to Washington to do so,” said a senior law enforcement official. “The officers interviewed him there and realized that there needed to be further investigating because something wasn’t right.”

Mr. Kapheim consented to a search of his car, which was parked on 16th Street and Constitution Avenue. In the course of that search, the officers found a hunting rifle in his trunk, and the ammunition.

Washington (CNN) -- A man was arrested at the White House Wednesday after the Secret Service found a rifle and ammunition in his car parked nearby.

41-year-old R.J. Capheim of Davenport, Iowa, approached a uniformed division officer at the White House and told the officer that someone in Iowa told him to go to the White House, the Secret Service said.

Capheim approached the officer at 15th Street entrance, just north of the East wing.

He told the officer that his car was located at 16th and Constitution, less than a half-mile from the White House. The uniformed division of the Secret Service proceeded to search his vehicle and found a 30/30 hunting rifle and ammunition.

13. A Hunting Rifle, even without a scope, a block away

would be an easy shot for all but a rank beginner. Anyone on the grounds in plain sight would be in trouble. The White House has bullet proof glass, but all outside staff and bystanders would be in the kill zone.
