Afternoon protest closes interstate in downtown St. Louis

Source: St. Louis Post-Dispatch

ST. LOUIS • About 350 protesters blocked the elevated interstate lanes near the Edward Jones Dome shortly after 2 p.m. today after a march through downtown.

They entered the interstate from the southbound exit ramp to the dome and Laclede's Landing. The interstate there was formerly Interstate 70 but was renamed Interstate 44 southeast of the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge.

Police vehicles had followed their march from a distance until lead elements of the protesters dashed up the exit ramp onto the highway.

Police then stopped traffic in both directions.

In the 1960s, protests were a novelty and the broadcast media were happy to cover them. But somewhere along the way, they decided that ignoring protests -- or showing a quick shot from a distance that didn't make it possible to read any of the signs or hear the chants -- was a good way to convince Americans that everything was just hunky-dory with the existing system.

So if the media won't cover you and livestreams are preaching to the choir, the only way to make outsiders aware there even are any grievances is to hold the protests where they can't be overlooked.

It remains to be seen whether this will piss off more people than it wins over -- but there are certainly rational arguments behind it.

I consider myself a very very left-wing liberal, but in my mind what happened last night after the Grand Jury's decision was presented did more harm than good, and include me among those that are "pissed off" by last night's rampage and some of today's disruptive (and dangerous) "protests".

to reconsider how you label yourself. You may well be a liberal, but you're not a leftist by any stretch.
