Sen. Rand Paul Introduces Declaration Of War Against ISIS

Source: National Public Radio

Saying President Obama does not have the authority to wage a war against the Islamic State, Sen. Rand Paul, a Republican from Kentucky, introduced a measure declaring war against the Sunni militant group.

"I believe the President must come to Congress to begin a war and that Congress has a duty to act," Paul said introducing his measure. "Right now, this war is illegal until Congress acts pursuant to the Constitution and authorizes it."

Interestingly, this is an issue that has brought some Republicans and Democrats together.

Rep. Adam Schiff, a Democrat from California, who authored a similar AUMF on the House side, praised Paul in a statement. "Regrettably, it looks more and more likely that Congress will skip town before debating and voting on a new authorization for war against ISIS," Schiff said. "Senator Paul's introduction of a war resolution today is a welcome addition to the growing ranks of bipartisan members calling for a debate and vote over a new authorization to use force and a repeal of the existing ones."

Let Congress vote it up or down and be on the record. We have had wars against Asia since the end of WW II without the U.S. declaring war once. Maybe administrations would be more hesitant with military adventurism if they had to get formal approval from Congress as the Constitution requires.

but I know Paul's first draft had a laughable amount of unrealistic conditions and expectations to meet...So it's not as cut-and-dried as you think even though Paul keeps spinning this as a "constitutional" issue (and hoping nobody actually reads it)

The repukes always pull the trump card called "patriotism" and spineless democrats vote for these war resolutions so as to not be called unpatriotic. The problem is with the stupid people in America who equate jingoism with patriotism and that is unlikely to change for a few generations.

look "presidential" for 2016...

Remember Obama tried going to congress before, and GOP leadership in so many words refused to handle the hot potato in an election year...
