PROTESTERS BLOCK SOME DOWNTOWN DURHAM STREETS

Updated 1 min ago
DURHAM (WTVD) -- Protesters upset by recent grand jury decisions in New York and Ferguson are blocking some streets and highways in Durham.

First, protesters blocked Mangum Street in downtown Durham.

The group then marched toward and onto the Durham Freeway, which prompted police to close the highway in both directions for about an hour.

Protesters are also blocking intersections of Duke and Chapel Hill Streets, and, at last report, were in front of the Durham Performing Arts Center.

how do we find out when an action is occurring? i would join them. there is something deeply, deeply wrong in this country and protests seem the only thing that even stands a chance of making change happen.

a real groundswell from the people might help make us less sick. the status quo is unbearable and too deadly.

did a good job. Even so some got arrested when police tried to break it up with oppressive tactics.

The police need to monitor the protestors but these methods are too heavy-handed. The harsh approach will only backfire. These are people who don't need the riot squad called down on them. It's like the police have no ability to tell the difference anymore.

to perform their regular duties in being watchful and helpful in the case of large gatherings of people. They should be there as much to help protect the protestors as anything else. But because street protest is now considered deviant behavior, the police in riot gear are themselves provocative-- hoping for the opportunity to use full force.

All crowds in this country are monitored. For one thing I worry that these types of peaceful protestors will be victimized by vigilantes with guns. So I am OK with police presence at a demonstration. But these cops need re-education in how to use appropriate means--AND they deserve higher pay. They reflect the paranoia of the whole society.

DPD took dozens of people into custody--won't say arrested--but
by and large the protest was peaceful. No one hurt, no property damage.
The crowd walked all over Durham, lie-in, shut down Hwy 147, marched
in front of DPAC (and got applause from some audience members) but did
not disrupt show.

Protest started around 7 PM. and continued for several hours. Looks like
most people have dispersed by 11 PM.
