CHICAGO (AP) A former Chicago police officer who spent years on death row before his murder conviction was overturned has been sentenced to life in prison plus five years for a grisly plot to kill a businessman.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports (http://bit.ly/12RTD76 ) that 64-year-old Steve Mandell was sentenced Thursday.
U.S. District Judge Amy St. Eve called his actions "evil" and that he has a "complete disregard for human life."
Mandell was convicted in February of plotting to kidnap, torture, extort money, then kill and dismember Riverside businessman Steve Campbell. St. Eve said the public needed to be protected from Mandell whose "glee" at the pain of others was "very apparent."
