... Earlier this year, Arpaio called a news conference to announce his own, privately funded birther probe, claiming the birth certificate released publicly by Obama is a fake. He’s raised roughly $40,000 in private contributions for the investigation.
On Monday, the Arizona Republic and Star-Advertiser were in Honolulu when two of Sheriff Joe’s agents — one volunteer and one member of the sheriff’s Threat Management squad, working on the taxpayer-funded clock — appeared at the Hawaii Department of Health to request a copy of the original Obama birth certificate. (They left with instructions to request one by mail.)
Asked about spending public money on his personal birther inquisition, Arpaio has said, “It’s one deputy, so what?” and that he hopes “the agency will be paid back through private donations.”
