Congress voted against funding a cure for cancer just to block a win for Biden
As a hospital doctor, Ive gotten pretty good at delivering bad news. Still, it never gets any easier. It certainly was not easy the day I told my 53-year-old patient, a devoted father of two, that his stomach pains were not from gallstones as everyone had assumed. Whenever a doctor says bad news, our minds often jump to that terrible C-word we fear: cancer. Unfortunately for my patient, I diagnosed him with a deadly form of cancer: cholangiocarcinoma. Over the next year, I would watch him deteriorate as he was readmitted with complication after complication.
Cancer affects everyone in some way, shape or form. Whether personally or through a family member or friend, the stress and heartbreak of a cancer diagnosis is immeasurable. Which is why I was so surprised when I read that Congress would not be renewing investments in the Cancer Moonshot initiative dedicated to curing cancer.
-snip-
Biden's Cancer Moonshot initiative is Congress' latest partisan casualty
However, with the ever-present dysfunction of Congress, maybe predictably, the program has been stalled. Some Republicans, refusing to give Biden a win, voted against the renewal of funding.
Even though this would be a win for all Americans and humanity it apparently did not outweigh the politics of making a Democrat look good. This is the definition of party over country.

(22,442 posts)consider desirables in their neck of the woods, would receive this health care too, NO!). The republican health care is basically, get sick and die.
Sound familiar? It should since they didn't want a border law to be approved either.
So, it's time to remove and replace this non-functional republican reps w/ people who want to actually do good for the Country. Not these idiots.

(275 posts)If you get sick and die, it's Gods will. I actually had, a
'sanctified' christian, tell me that once. Of course he 'talked to God' about it.

Big thanks for any help.

(10,214 posts)I found a Reddit post that says it was part of the big appropriation bill, but hard to see where it was cut out.

The appropriation bill's track record is here. Really hard to decipher.

Maybe we can ask DNC/bigwigs for help with this.

(15,711 posts)As he so well lays out in his many very well researched chapters, the "moonshot" or other "throwing money at the problem" haven't worked very well. Cancer is still a very difficult disease to treat even with so much invested in cures or just ameliorations. There are so many types of cancers that are dependent on so many factors in each persons body and environment. Moonshots are PR material. Slow and steady research and clinical trials are helping as well as new genetic modification techniques.

I hate Republicans. Their pissing and moaning about the debt and deficits is because they wont raise taxes, choosing instead, over all other needs, tax cuts.

(727 posts)... but it's hard no, it's IMPOSSIBLE to imagine anything more horrible, obscene, or repulsive than someone that would put their diseased political beliefs ahead of research to save the lives of cancer victims. But then, these same vile, twisted, and truly malignant mutants put Der Party ahead of the best interests of the nation, their constituents, and even their own children, just so they can crow about gittin' over on dem libs.
Such people have NO business holding high elective office. There have to be minimum standards, a code of ethics, a test, before one can even file papers to run for office. The likes of Empty Greene, Lauren Boebert, Tom Cotton, Rand Paul, Ron Johnson, and hundreds of others should never have been on a ballot. We need a return to true statesmanship; we need honor and integrity restored to the deliberative bodies that govern our lives, not "politics as usual". Politics is the prostitution of statesmanship, and this isn't a fucking game of one-upmanship.
Only irredeemable sociopaths show such utter disregard for the lives of others, and this November, they have to be flushed back into the cesspool that spawned them by a Blue Tsunami more powerful than any landslide ever seen before in America. We must redeem ourselves in the eyes of the world, and commit ourselves to the betterment of all, not just corporate donors with the moral compass of rabid hyenas.

(424 posts)I am a 35-year lymphoma survivor.
I was on my second remission when Trump tried to repeal it in 2017.
In 2019, it returned and it took 3 years before we found a treatment that worked.
The previous four treatments all failed.
This third remission would not have been possible if ACA had been repealed because I would have lost my lifetime limit protections.
Under recommendation of my oncologist, I am under management treatments which total almost $1M a year.
If a new Trump administration repeals ACA and there are no lifetime limit protections, my health will probably be at risk.
