Michigan Supreme Court will hear arguments on 4 disputed ballot proposals
LANSING The Michigan Supreme Court announced this evening it will hear arguments in four cases Thursday involving disputed ballot proposals aiming for spots on the November ballot.
Backers of three of the proposals to require a statewide vote for future international bridge crossings (aimed at blocking a new bridge across the Detroit River), a two-thirds vote requirement in the Legislature to approve tax hikes and a plan to authorize 8 new casinos are seeking to overturn a Monday decision by the Board of State Canvassers to keep them off the ballot.
The fourth, a labor-backed proposal to enshrine collective bargaining rights in the state constitution, is being challenged by coalition of business and taxpayer groups. That proposal was ordered on the ballot Monday by the state Court of Appeals.
Final decisions on each of the measures are needed quickly in order for the Nov. 6 ballots to be prepared and printed.
