At 14, it was no “Gift from God”, Trust Me

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/10/24/1149525/-At-14-it-was-no-Gift-from-God-Trust-Me

My father, his brother, and their father raped and sexually abused all of the girls of my generation. My father saw it as his mission to train me in my job as a woman – to sexually please men. I could go into details about the abuse, but that’s not the point of this post. (I spent my early 20s in intense therapy, up to three times a week, and I can say that PTSD is not a life-sentence.) At age 14 my father impregnated me. I can’t tell you whether it was “forcible rape” or not because while I fought many times, sometimes I just lay there crying. Sometimes I was distracting him from my sister, who seemed more fragile than I; sometimes his threat to ruin something I loved was credible enough that I didn't fight; sometimes I was in too much pain to fight. But it was always rape.

Perhaps my “magical lady parts” hadn’t yet learned the whole “shut it down” trick; perhaps I lived in the real world and not in fantasy land. But in no world and at no time was that fetus a gift from God.

Fortunately for me, my father was only crazy in one way. He liked to have sex with minor girls; he didn’t want them to give birth. He took me to the “abortionist” – my mother had her own insanity and I was clueless about how my cycle was supposed to work – so he realized I was late, he took me to the doctor, he chose not to pay for anesthesia. Lucky me.

Anyway, that God (should s/he exist) allows evil to happen is unquestionable. That does not make it his/her intent – if you accept that God created free will. If you don’t accept free will then I guess that if I go out and castrate every guy with a glint in his eye that I don’t like that would be God’s gift as well.......

The thing that scares me too is with the return of the whole patriarchy movement, this is considered one of the privileges of patriarchy, by many. That is why the mother didn't protect the daughter. That is why the mother would never consider her daughter's wishes regarding the outcome of pregnancy. In these deeply patriarchal societies or micro-slices of societies, women truly do not matter. Only the wishes and well-being of men matter. And the women are there only to serve the patriarch in any way possible, and it does not matter what kind of harm, up to and including death, befalls the woman.

I grew up in a family that thought that way. It is deeply ugly and crazy-making. When I read stories like this I become psychotically enraged. I imagine I am not the only one.

her 8 siblings were all adoptees, and they were all molested and beaten repeatedly by the stepfather (both the boys and the girls) while the stepmother did nothing. Among other atrocities, she was required to give the stepfather a blowjob each morning before she went off to elementary school. Most of her siblings grew up to be alcoholics and drug addicts who died early. She ran away from home at 15 or 16, and found a Christian group home that thankfully did not have a man who thought he was ordained to screw or abuse everyone around him.

Strangely enough, I grew up in a dysfunctional family with a depressed mother and alcoholic father, and I remember a couple of times when I was a young teen that my father was 'acting funny' or 'looking at me funny,' and of course now I wonder if he had had those urges and only barely restrained himself from acting on them. He was certainly patriarchal, but not in a religious way. I have been supremely sensitive to that sort of craziness since childhood, which has saved me a couple of times from encounters with strange men that could have been fatal.

There are lots of us who have suffered tangentially and/or directly from patriarchal shit, and that is why we are always in attack mode when we hear this stuff. It strikes directly to our experience and to our empathy with other victims.

Voting for womens rights does not make one a single issue voter because if you are voting for womens rights you are voting for a whole lot more as well, including equal rights for everyone and the ability to choose how your life turns out yourself.

by a very abusive "boyfriend" who would not allow me money for birth control or an abortion. I was young and had no self esteem, he isolated me from family and friends, kept me under his thumb. Fortunately I did have government assistance to turn to, I was able to break away. I raised my daughter, got an education, and bought my own home. I benefited and grew beyond the need of government support. My point....my daughter is an adult now, bi-polar, like her father. Was she a "gift from God"? She was conceived by a form of rape. Her life has been a roller coaster. She will be dependent on the government for years to come due to her inherited mental disability. I would not wish her life on anyone. I have loved her unconditionally, but what quality of life does she have?

I don't think God bestowed rape but Satan was in control when rapes happen. It is a sick person who can relate any pregnancy to rape as God's gift, call it Satan's gift. It is bad men doing bad things. Why should we further punish a young girl who has been raped with having to go through childbirth. Sad sad sad.

It is unfortunate that the majority of the parents (the mother is guilty for not helping the child, IMO) are biblical in that they believe that abortion is a sin, and how could one think of killing a child of the rapist's seed? They think that is more important than any need of the girl or woman.

This story is deeply distressing but needs to be told. To all girls and women who've gone through -- or are going through -- this kind of hell: We've got your back. We're in your corner. We want you to have a good and fulfilling life free of this torment.

This kind of horrific abuse is the extreme manifestation of the patriarchy the Republicans are working to protect. It is evil, and it is the most important reason that we must defeat them.

As a man, I have to delineate here that your situation HAD to be much worse, no question. For any politician --- who has no clue how sexual assault tears the mind apart----to minimize rape with an empty platitude for other Men to rally around is sick and should be codified to be as criminal as making a threat against the President of the United States.
