US Mass Shootings: An Extreme Outbreak Of Violence (Voice of Russia)
The US has recently faced an extreme outbreak of violence. Thus, lately, a Vietnam veteran gunned down a school bus driver and then abducted a 5-year-old boy from the bus, taking him to an underground bunker. Experts discussed the problem with the Voice of Russia.
Mass shootings in the US make the gun control issue really burning. After the Arizona shooting spree, the Colorado theater shooting and Sandy Hook elementary tragedy in Connecticut, experts predicted the US government would toughen gun laws. Leonid Gusev, senior researcher at the Institute of International Research at the Moscow-based Institute for Foreign Relations, finds this very unlikely as owning a gun is already part of the US mentality.
"Obama and a number of his predecessors as well as other politicians attempted to limit gun ownership, which has been the US society essential for over 200 years. People cant imagine being banned from carrying guns. They consider the move being detrimental to their freedom."
PsychologistSergey Kluchnikov of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, on the contrary, believes that gun laws will somehow be toughened but the measure will benefit nobody else but the US weapon-makers.
"Some decisions to this effect have already been made making Americans rush to gun shops and stockpile guns. Experts see no point in this but gun makers are making good money on this hysteria. We all know Chekhovs gun - if there are too many guns they will be fired sooner or later."
