N.C. governor attacks higher ed, proposes funding colleges by graduates’ jobs

Theres a new voice in the continued and rather tired trashing of higher education and the liberal arts by conservatives: North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory.
Just a few weeks after he took office, more than 12,000 people have already signed a petition blasting his attack on higher education, in which he referred to college students as butts and said he wants to fund public community colleges and universities based on the number of students who get jobs after graduation.
McCrory, speaking recently on former education secretary Bill Bennetts talk show, said that higher education had been taken over by the educational elite, and that too many college courses did not help students get jobs, according to the Progressive Pulse. After Bennett mentioned the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hills gender studies program a subject that is a common target for conservatives McGrory said that students who take those classes should go to a private school and take it, but I dont want to subsidize that if its not going to get someone a job ...
On the K-12 level and even in higher education, many reformers want to apply a corporate model to the public education system, which is a civic institution. It just doesnt work. Most businesses cant survive their own business models. Why does anybody think public schools will?

(2,203 posts)strikes again and has only been in office for a month. I've written all my local reps/senators. Not that will help much as I'm deep in the red part of NC. Oh well, at least my boys will graduate with good Liberal Arts educations in the next few years before Governors nonsense kicks in. No my daughtr ont he other hand may be in danger of surrfering this nonsense as she's just a 9th grader. Hopefully the Governor and enough folks will say no to not supporting Liberal Arts education....but I'm not holding my breathe on that one, especially since the Goernor is pushing this plan.....Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

(39,345 posts)I did tell people that because I was in Charlotte while he was mayor. Mostly there, though, he was a sit on his ass pretty kinda repub: liked the perks and prestige, but didn't really do anything. But here, he's a smary asshole bent on destroying what makes NC work. If we can get him to just be "ceremonial" for 4 years, we'll be doing good. Then we can replace him with a Dem.
