The CIA and the Cult of Intelligence

The CIA and the Cult of Intelligence by Victor Marchetti. Written by a former CIA officer and censored by the CIA, but still contained enough damaging information to prompt Congressional hearings. The main thesis of the book is this: Most "top secret" classifications are designed not to protect the country but to keep the stupid or evil deeds of the U.S. government from public scrutiny.

Written more than thirty years ago, it will make you think, "The more things change, the more they remain the same."
