My review of Amazon's new political comedy, "Alpha House"
Last night, I watched Alpha House, a slick new political comedy streaming on Amazon with a strong cast and supporting roles. No spoilers here, but what could be better than a well written plot peppered with plenty of partisan humor targeting Republicans as the butt of some really funny satire?
It was hilarious... think of a mix between the political intrigue of Netflix's streaming video, "House of Cards", crossed with the drunken frat house hijinks of "Animal House", and then stir in a dash of Jon Stewart's skewering humor.
Written by Garry Trudeau of Doonesbury fame, its set in contemporary Washington, and there is a notable resemblance to actual senators as well as the usual headliner political figures, and lots of GOP stereotypes to round out the storyline. In the pilot episode, an hysterical Bill Murray has a short, but hilarious cameo and there is also a guest shot with Steven Colbert in character.
It stars John Goodman, who plays one of four blustering conservative Republican Senators who live together in a Washington D.C. townhouse. Goodman plays a Southern-fried, North Carolina Senator, Gil-John Biggs, a former football coach, facing a primary threat from a Tea Party candidate.
There's also a gay Republican Senator who is, of course, an outspoken homophobe in public; he's feted at a "Say No to Sodomy Award" gala... very funny stuff! There's even a dashing, and womanizing, Florida Senator of Cuban extraction who has his eyes on the White House... sound familiar?
I hope the rest of the series is just as good as the pilot. If your political funny bone leans to satire and mocking the political shenanigans of conservative buffoons, this new video series from Amazon is worth a view.
