back in the late 70s and early 80s. The Metro was still being expanded and, when I first moved there, closed at 6 pm. Coming from New York I couldn't believe it! A subway closing at night? How strange!

I arrived in '78, but rarely had a need to take metro as I could walk across the Mall to my office. I paid NO attention to Metro closing hours!

for zipping around the district. Mostly I carpooled in from Annandale where I lived. We used to swing by Metro stops trying to pick up passengers so we'd have enough to justify our using the special carpool lanes, when one of our regulars was out. It was kinda nice.

I had one memorable carpool ride home the evening the Air Florida flight slammed into the 14th St. Bridge where we were heading and were forced to go over the Memorial Bridge (along with everybody else). The problem was that when the federal government sent workers home early because of a snow storm, other non-government companies and organizations did likewise. So everybody hit the streets at once! What a traffic jam that was! It was January and became so dark we had no idea where we were...that was a scary ride...

heard the news along the way! Got home to learn the details. In fact I was rather close to the accident, but not close enough to be aware of it at the time.

We MIGHT have bumped into each other that day!

day after work. That day we all left our offices at 3 pm so we were on our way in the car when the plane crashed. That area was chaotic with a massive traffic logjam. We saw the wreckage as we passed by the 14th St. Bridge on the Memorial Bridge. By then it was getting dark and eventually we were in near total dark and fog. Suddenly the figure of a man loomed by the road, flagging us down for a ride. He was nicely dressed so we made room for him in the car. We asked where we were and he said "the Pentagon" which is where he worked. I remember we all shared a large bag of cheese puffs and some 7-Up...
