Mike Malloy - No Trust In The Supreme Court - Part 1

An overwhelming majority of voters would support sweeping reforms to the Supreme Court, as trust and confidence in the institution has eroded in recent years, according to a new survey by the Democratic-aligned firm Greenberg Quinlan Rosner.

Wide majorities disagree with the recent 5-4 party-line rulings that have upended a century of campaign finance law and tilted the rules in favor of the extremely wealthy and major corporations. The landmark Citizens United ruling was opposed by a whopping 80-18 margin. The more recent McCutcheon decision, which lifted caps on total giving, was said by a 51 percent majority to be likely to create more corruption, while 8 percent suggested it would lead to less.

I have been writing songs since I was a young teenager. In the past several years, these songs have become much more political, given the times we live in. I have fumbled with both the piano and guitar and several sequencers, but I’m not a musician, I’m a writer, vocalist, performance artist. It’s what I do. This song started several months ago, when I got out of my bed to write on an envelope the words Corporate Owned. I had a melody for those words, but no idea of verses or where those words would end up. I knew they would end up somewhere when the time was right. The envelope leaned against my bedroom mirror waiting. When the Supreme Court made it’s latest anti common man ruling I was very upset and signed every petition I could about this disgraceful ruling. On Friday 4/4/14, after a nice nap, I grabbed a notebook, sat in my sun porch and wrote this. On Saturday 4/5/14 I taped it 3 times in my upstairs hall, which has the best acoustics. I sing there often. The 3rd version seemed OK, even though I screwed up the 3rd refrain and you can see my eyes going to the page in front of me to get the lyrics right. My resources and equipment are limited but I do what I can with what I have. Thanks for watching.

I also have a blog entry called Corporate Owned at this address, if you're interested.
