(32,723 posts)Cops stare you down.
At 18 - Not old enough to purchase liquor but old enough to go to the penitentiary.
Arrested for things that aren't a crime JUST to arrest you. (No doubt hoping you "resist"
Murder you for fun.
I know a very nice young lady from South Africa (love the Afrikaans accent) who got hassled walking to work.

(12,233 posts)being able to drink at 18 is that you can serve your country and die, but can't drink.. or you have to pay taxes like an adult and you can't drink... ANYWAY, I've never thought about it in terms of "you can go to the penn, but can't drink".. That tells you the environment they are living in is beat down and that's the expectation of their young lives.. that they will end up in jail at some point. It's sad.

You go in all nervous only to find out all your old friends you grew up with are there.
It's like, "Hey! I haven't seen you in years! Where have you been?"
"Right here."

(3,208 posts)I dress like a bum and when I was a teenager I stole cartons of cigarettes all the time.
But cops don't even see me. Because I am a middle aged white woman. And I have been around long enough to know that this stuff should have stopped years ago.
The war on drugs needs to end. We need more jobs, productive things to be doing, fixing roads and bridges, and parks. But rich white people want to keep playing this horrible game.
