After a tragic day in Ottawa, the NHL and the Pittsburgh Penguins proved that they are about more than just hockey. The Penguins decided to play the Canadian national anthem prior to their game against the Philadelphia Flyers Wednesday night.

The lyrics to "O Canada" were placed on the scoreboard to encourage fan participation in the singing of both anthems. It was a touching moment that emphasized that this is more than just a game.

The opposing team, bitter rivals Philly Flyers (yes, the opponent was not a Canadian team so anthem was not mandatory) looked touched too. Kudos to both teams and the fans for not letting a rivalry interfere with this tribute.

But a suggestion to the Penguins, and any other sports organization: whenever you hire a singer to lead a public singing of this or any other national anthem, DON'T pick a pop-style tenor to do it, for invariably, he will sing it in a key that is too high to sing comfortably for most singers, yet rather too low to sing an octave lower (unless you are either a basso profundo or the reincarnation of Beatrice Arthur!).
