Russia monitors telephones, arrests mother of 7 for warning Ukraine about Russian troops

The Russia government says it is not at war with Ukraine and its troops aren't there, but charges someone with high treason for telling the Ukraine the Russian troops might be on the way.

Russian mother-of-seven to stand trial for treason over Ukraine call

It has been seven days since Anatoly Gorlov has seen his wife.

Accused of treason, Russian citizen Svetlana Davydova was jailed last week on suspicion of treason after she called the Ukrainian embassy with information on possible Russian troop movements. She is now in the Lefortova pre-trial detention centre, though no date yet has been set for her hearing.

Her husband explained she is a passionate opponent of the conflict in the east of Ukraine which has killed more than 5,000 people since April last year.

“She possibly might have considered that by calling the Ukrainian embassy, fewer people would die,” Anatoly said adding, “on top of that they say that Russia is not at war or something else. I know that she was not driven by any harmful intentions.”

years I have not. However, can you imagine disclosing info on troop movement to one of our many perceived adversairies would not invite a visit from the authorities? Really? I am not saying this is right but how naive to think this wouldn't happened here. Think NSA. imho

The case has been widely discussed on Russian social media, with many blaming the authorities for detaining a mother of seven. Davydova has three natural children. The other four children are from her husband and Svetlana's' sister, who was previously married to the same man. They live all together, a source within the social department of Smolensk told Interfax.

According to Davydova's lawyer, Andrey Stebenyov, the court has ruled for the woman to be detained for two months. An expert examination of the case of alleged treason will be carried out. The lawyer also said that the charges are not completely unfounded, as many believe.

"It's not like the case has been launched for no reason at all. Some people call me and say: 'It's a total lawlessness.' It's not. There is information [on the case], there are facts, there are grounds," Stebenyov said in an interview with Govorit Moskva radio.
