(5,169 posts)Above and beyond the fact that Rep. John Conyers is 86 years old is the fact that he has a lot of baggage that would end up being a massive distraction from Sen. Sanders' campaign.
For example, there is the conviction of his wife, Monica, on criminal charges
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monica_Conyers
Conyers is the subject of an ongoing FBI investigation into political corruption in the city, and pled guilty to conspiring to commit bribery. On March 10, 2010, a federal judge sentenced her to 37 months in prison with an additional two years of supervised probation.

And then there is his relationship with Louis Farrakhan.

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) A Michigan congressman has apologized after attending Louis Farrakhans appearance at a Detroit church during which the Nation of Islam leader made anti-Jewish remarks.
U.S. Rep. John Conyers joined Detroit City Council member JoAnn Watson and others at Fellowship Chapel for Farrakhans Friday speech.
The Chicago-based minister denounced Satanic Jews and the synagogue of Satan that he said controls major U.S. institutions and said President Barack Obama has surrounded himself with Satan members of the Jewish community.

Conyerss statement comes one day after the Jewish advocacy group the Anti-Defamation League criticized the Detroit Democrat for failing to counter Farrakhans anti-Semitism.

There are far too many better choices. The negatives of Rep. Conyers would sink Sen. Sanders.

(206,072 posts)He was extremely proactive during the Bush* years, spoke up and out for us when no one else would. If you notice, we have a John Conyers avatar. There was once a call for all DUers to change to a John Conyers avatar and so many did that you could no longer tell us apart, LOL.
And did you know that John Conyers is a DUer and has posted here? I think it was only once, but he went to the trouble of registering and posting and it got a lot of attention. I couldn't help noticing that the first poster who replied to the congressman had a John Conyers avatar...
Here he is:

(4,229 posts)I know nothing about inner city kids and the problems they face.
However it was interesting. A few years ago I knew this kid and she had moved from a high unemployment county here in WV to a small town.
She was talking to me, sort of bewildered, about how most of her classmates here were going to have summer jobs. She didn't want one. Yet she was always being upset that she was poor and had no money.
I realized that in the county where she came from basically there was not enough work for adults much less kids and up there so the culture of working for the things you wanted was foreign to her and the concept of having to be dependable or to be somewhere at a certain time was just not there. Here sister had a lot of problems dealing with work because she wasn't used to anybody telling her what to do, so even just a boss telling you what to do and how to do it was "being mean". Also where they came from most of the adults they interacted with were home all the time. Retired, on welfare or disability, or simply just working when they wanted to under the table and hanging out most of the time.
So I think even if we have to spend the money I think maybe giving kids jobs so they can feel some self worth and get some work habits is maybe more important than even schooling.
This was something that sort of perplexed me. In general I feel like we put too much focus on material things and not on being happy with what we have. I feel as a culture we work too much and don't spend enough time enjoying and socializing.
However this sort of showed me the flip side. How lack of developing work habits early in life and acceptance of lowered living conditions rather than working to change them sort of handicapped kids.

As alluring and simplistic as it sounds, we can't breed our way out of a fucked up racist and war-like country. We have to fix the adults first.
Any solution that fails to address that is nothing more than continuing with same plantation mentality we are operating under.
