-CON'T, SPEECH/FORUM: Part 2. In the Senator's BarnBerner Speech, he made point after point on issues and provided solutions that continued to inspire and fire up the 500 person capacity audience. Sanders emphasized that to achieve the goal of moving the country in a better direction we must THINK BIG, we must MOBILIZE grassroots movements and we must increase VOTING.
The Arlington, VA event, titled "REBOOTING OUR POLICY AGENDA TO RECLAIM THE AMERICAN DREAM" was a 2-hour evening policy forum, not a campaign rally. Featured also was co-guest speaker Democratic Rep. Don Beyer (VA-8th) who spoke and took questions from the audience like Sen. Sanders; hosts were Sandra J. Klaussen, Frank Anderson, the Congressional Progressive Caucus and other groups.
MAJOR TOPICS: national employment numbers have improved, yet many people still need work or have stopped looking; many are working part time jobs, and for horrendously low wages; raise the MINIMUM WAGE TO A LIVING WAGE of $15 so nobody in America who works 40 hours a week lives in poverty; create PAY EQUITY FOR WOMEN who only receive 78 cents on the dollar.~ The tragedy of YOUTH UMEMPLOYMENT. In a recent policy report on YOUTH age 17-20, the unemployment rate for whites is 33%, Hispanics 36% and African Americans 51%. The US has more people in PRISON than any other nation on earth, including authoritarian, communist China with a vastly larger population; instead of locking up hundreds of thousands of young people we must INVEST IN JOBS AND EDUCATION rather than in jails, Sanders said.
FAMILY VALUES means women have the right to control their bodies; gay couples should have the same right to marry; paid sick leave 7 days, vacation leave 2 wks. & maternity leave 12 wks. at least. ~ CLIMATE CHANGE/global warming-the debate is over, the major scientific community agrees; we have only a short window to move away from fossil fuels; the US should lead the world to transition to sustainable energy; we have the technology now and it will only get better. ~ In CONCLUSION, the Senator stated that if we STAND TOGETHER, increase VOTER TURNOUT, MOTIVATE young and working people to stand up and say loudly and clearly, THIS NATION BELONGS TO US, that GOVERNMENT MUST REPRESENT ALL OF US, not just wealthy donors- then there is nothing- nothing that we cannot accomplish.

(24,010 posts)I'm very, very impressed with this man and his ability to CLEARLY say what is REAL about our economy, and to CLEARLY and POSITIVELY lay out what must be done about the egregious injustice of our economy, without any anger in his voice whatsoever and without personalizing the debate. He is just so awesomely LUCID.
I can hardly believe my ears, frankly. Can a U.S. politician be telling us the truth, the way FDR did? Can a U.S. politician be actually intending to serve all of us, not the billionaire few? Can a U.S. politician be actually intending to implement way, WAY overdue reforms?
We've had so many stolen elections and Democratic leaders selling us out, so many fork-tongued leaders in our own party, let alone the raving maniac fascists on the other side, it is mindboggling to see anybody in the presidential arena who seems untouched by the sickness of our political life.
