(3,580 posts)Can you really be dragged out of your car for not putting a cigarette out?

(316 posts)The officer seems to get very offended that Ms. Bland isn't being as submissive as he would like. His hostility can start to be seen when he says, "Are you done?"
In his anger, he decides to punish her and 'show her who's boss' by removing her from the car and putting her in handcuffs. This only serves to escalate the situation. Once he announced his intention to arrest her, he felt that he couldn't allow her to just refuse to leave the car and get away with not obeying him so he decides to use excessive force because he can't let her win. I think this is the problem with a lot of police interactions.
There needs to be more training on how to diffuse a situation without violence and also anger management training. But also, this guy seems like he is just a dick so maybe training wouldn't even help. Maybe there needs to be better screening for anger issues before hiring.
I don't understand how anyone can watch this and think that the officer behaved appropriately.

(3,580 posts)I'd be exhausted. That's the milder version. I work with people who are upset. It's my job. As long as the person is not physically attacking me, I don't care what they say. They're upset, this is not their best day. You have to have some humanity when dealing with the public and you have authority over the person. There was no reason for the cop to do anything other than hand her the ticket and leave her be. How tragic it ended this way.

(2,672 posts)She refused to put out her cigarette when he asked her to and it escalated from there.
Just because she refused to put out her cigarette when asked, the fucking pig became hostile. How dare she refuse to do what I asked!
Fuck the police and the authority they think they have when a normal citizen refuses to comply to nonsense. The police think we should comply to all orders, regardless of how stupid the orders are, fuck 'em!

(9,289 posts)edited to add: And what the fuck was she doing in jail for any longer than it took to do the basic paper work? Give some little shits some power over people and their small little hateful minds can't resist abusing it.

(57,936 posts)around the car? We could hear everything being said up to a certain point and then there was white noise. The officers had their heads in the car, but the doors were opened, and at an earlier point we could hear Sandra's voice from within the car when she spoke to the officer. Did they turn the sound off? Did they really not speak to each other as they searched the car?
He lost his temper, got her out of the car, arrested her for a ticket and being angry (who isn't angry when they get a ticket) and nothing more. Then HE MOVED HER OUT OF THE WAY OF THE CAMERA and either she kicked him as he claims (out of the range of the camera which should not be allowed) or he beat her up. Out of the range of the camers.
It's a good thing someone has that part of the "arrest" or detainment or whatever it was on a camera.
Then he starts thinking about the law and how he can frame the events so that she is at fault and not him.
This video should be used to educate young people about how to deal with officers when stopped.
He lost it, hurt her and then lied about it. And the way the video appears to be cut is rather odd as you point out.

(20,886 posts)We could only hear the other officers as long as they were in range of his mic. Therefore couldn't hear them as they searched.
I think they might have put her in the second car, which would mean no mic.
But there are definitely cuts to visual and audio.
When they were off camera, there was a reflection in the hood. If this were a TV show, a hacker geek could pull that up, enhance it and show us what happened off camera.

(57,936 posts)The officer got mad over nothing. Nothing. She was obviously unarmed and not dangerous. She was exercising her right to free speech, and he deprived her of that right, and that is what set the whole thing off.
As I watched it, having watched this kind of arrest for the first time, I realized that we have a problem generally with law enforcement in that you don't lose your right to free speech just because an officer decides to stop you or ticket you even if he is right to give you a ticket. That certainly was not the intent of the Constitution. I had never thought about that, but you have the right to protest the police officer's conduct, his appearance anything, because you have the right of free speech. That officer basically arrested her and made her get out of the car because she exercised her right to free speech. She was mad before he took her out of the car. It is not illegal to be angry or made or to say you are.
That's just my opinion. But what is the use of the protection of the natural right to free speech if you can't use it when you feel that a police officer is abusing his authority against you? It's almost the textbook example of the reason the Founding Fathers put that provision in the Constitution.
Police officers don't become gods just because they put a badge on top of a uniform. Sorry. That's my opinion.

(20,886 posts)My skin tone is lily white, and this stuff scares the shit out of me. I can't even imagine what a black person or hispanic goes through.
I was stopped a couple of months ago on what I considered a bogus stop. I saw that the officer was having a bad day and just kept my (usually loud) mouth shut.

(3,580 posts)You can see when she makes the right turn into the opposite lane, he made a uturn and rode right up on her. He saw the out of state plates and black female driver. And off he went after her. Then she changes lanes to get out of his way as any normal person is told to do when le or ems is behind you. He pushed it from the1st time he spotted her before he even made the u turn.

(31 posts)When a cop car drives up behind you at a high speed most people pull over if there is another lane. Whether a blinker is turned on or not makes no difference - there weren't any other cars on the road. He obviously wanted to pull her over. I couldn't watch after he took her out of the car and took her off camera. That was totally sick- if he isn't charged for murder he should be charged for kidnaping or something like that.

(57,936 posts)Maybe he thought it was a stolen car?
Officers should not lose their tempers so easily. He was having fun with the whole thing and then she is found dead. And did the officers who were searching the car not talk to each other during their search? Or did they turn the sound off?
We heard Sandra's voice from within the car in the beginning of the video, but when the two officers searched the car all you heard was white noise. Raises some questions.

(7,805 posts)It isn't vanishing cars - its the same cars looped 5 or 6 times (at Time stamp 25:01 minutes).
Additionally, everyone is stating the video is altered, but the audio is fluent/same.
I don't believe that conclusion is beyond all doubt (listen closely, you can hear voice edits)
Also, the officers searching the car are talking (even one on his mic) - but we can't hear what is being said.
And that female officer that comes up brown nosing the bad faith cop - should be ashamed of herself!

(20,453 posts)Public consumption is waiting for it, I'm sure.
They don't answer the phone at the Sheriff's office at this time. Too busy forming strategy to hold on to what they have.
