Until the announcement of their "class action settlement" BP was able to lie about what has happened in the Gulf of Mexico and prevent any negative news stories to follow up on the disaster. No Anderson Cooper or Rachel Maddow! By the way, the settlement does not cover everyone and it is designed to not pay for all of the damages.

Corporations can regulate themselves, they say. Yeah, right! Remember when BP initially was saying that only about 1000 barrels/day were coming out of that gulf oil well? But after seeing the actual video of the broken well, anyone could clearly see that that estimate should be ALOT higher.

"The company had initially refused to allow scientists to perform more accurate, independent measurements, saying that it was not relevant to the response and that such efforts might distract from efforts to stem the flow. Former Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency Carol Browner and Congressman Ed Markey (D-MA) both accused BP of having a vested financial interest in downplaying the size of the leak in part due to the fine they will have to pay based on the amount of leaked oil."

In many respects, the true enemies of the US are these oil (fossil fuel) companies.
