"The country is kinder and gentler today. Those things could never happen today."
"Those are just conspiracy theories. Sure, they are all true, but still."
"You know how many people would have to remain silent to cover something like that up?"
"No U.S. official would act so inappropriately. That just can't be true. i refuse to believe it."
"Ridiculous. What would be the purpose. I mean, sure, money and power, but besides that?"
"Scientifically impossible."
"Those people are defenders of America. I don't believe they would do that."
"So what? Those things had to be done to protect America from the scourge."

The only one that is honest is the "so what?" Because some people feel that way, that the end justifies the means. And that is what underlies all of those things.

... to suggest that Kennedy's antipathy toward Allen Dulles' malevolent monstrosity is what got him killed. Dulles was a psychopath who detested democracy. Though he mouthed words of praise for the institution in public appearances, people who knew him said that he did not believe that Congress and the American people could be trusted to run the country the way he thought it should be.

Virtually every major covert CIA operation, though occasionally yielding the short-term successes desired, has resulted in utter disasters in the long term, and has done more to damage America's standing in the world than any other agency.

Papa bush was the head of the CIA for a good while. No wonder his son got to be the worst president in history.
