Related: About this forumArmed Militiamen Take Over Federal Building in Oregon
Armed white terrorists have invaded and are currently occupying federal property.
Three of Cliven Bundys sons and approximately 150 other armed militia members most of them remnants of the 2014 Bundy Ranch standoff in Nevada have taken over the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge building in Harney County, Oregon, allegedly to provoke a standoff with the federal government. The group is reportedly led by Bundys son, Ammon, who is accompanied by brothers Ryan and Mel. [emphasis mine]

(216 posts)National Wildlife Refuges are managed by the federal Fish and Wildlife Service. Another group they probably have no love for. Large numbers of Pacific Flyway migratory waterfowl feed and rest there during there migrations. Imagine, the federal government telling them they can't hunt a place with so many birds. It's in the Constitution, they have the right to hunt and fish on the land anytime they want. You do know that it's included in the right to keep and bear arms, don't you?

(2,382 posts)... that these simple-minded skid marks have to be taken down. They're protesting an appeals court's imposition of a mandatory minimum sentence for a crime for which the defendants were convicted, but the lower court afforded them a suspiciously light sentence. These gibbering jerk-offs think they're somehow not subject to the laws the rest of us must obey.
Infantile selfishness is the root of their delusions, reinforced by intemperate remarks like, "The guys with the guns make the rules!" courtesy of that malignant asshole, Wayne LaPierre, that give them the fatally mistaken impression that brandishing assault rifles makes them "Big Boys."
Unfortunately, the Constitution has a very narrow definition of treason (Article III, section 3 states, "Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court." and though Cliven the Lesser and his brain-dead buddies will do some hard time - if they're not killed first - it won't be for treason.

(57,936 posts)"Mine" is maybe the third most important word to a two-year-old. Mommy and Daddy being maybe the first and second. A lot of the life a two-year-old focuses on protecting his/her toys from other two-year-olds or older brothers and sisters, even parents.
Our country was founded on the concept that we would be "free" owners of private property.
Thomas Jefferson was very proud of the fact that he lead the charge in ending primogeniture, the right of the first-born to inherit the title and much if not all of the family property. He felt that was essential to enabling citizens to own property and therefore to be contributors to the political life of the country.
A lot of DUers mention that in early America, in some areas even a lot of areas, people had to own property to vote. That was viewed as a good thing because most people could easily obtain property once they were settled and then they could vote. If we limited voting to property (land, real property) owners today, few people could vote. It's that social and economic change that makes the requirement of property ownership for voting seem so draconian today. It did exclude a fair number of people even in early America, but in our time, it would exclude maybe the majority of Americans, anyway, many, many of us.
Very few Americans really own much of value beyond maybe a used car. People are in the process of buying houses and land, but most people don't yet "own" their homes or land.
Really, it's the banks and a few very wealthy people who "own" in our country today.
I'm seriously asking myself, what happens when we wake up and realize that we don't own much of anything, and that our Constitution which so clearly protects the right of ownership is actually only protecting the right of a very small group of people and of the corporations and banks. The rest of us don't have much property to protect, if any.
The personal rights guaranteed in the Constitution are being eaten away bite by bite, gnaw by gnaw. Rights like the Fourth Amendment right are under attack. Surveillance, public and private, is everywhere. We barely even own our "own," if you can call them that, secrets.
The Fifth Amendment right to counsel in a criminal case and protection against being compelled to testify against ourselves? What with all the surveillance cameras, etc. and the eavesdropping even on attorneys, our Fifth Amendment rights are gradually becoming hard to claim when it matters. We do get a jury trial. (Never qualified for one myself. Hope you haven't and don't either.)
I'm exaggerating this a bit. Free speech rights we have, but not in privately owned shopping malls and not if we gather in a large group and march down a street -- unless we plan it very well. It's really not very free. Not that I want to need to exercise those rights, but someone, someday might want to.
I don't know where this leads. I really don't. I'm just wondering.
I have no suggestions or solutions on how to deal with this.
I think that property ownership is a very natural thing. As I pointed out, two-year-olds really value owning what matters to them. I think we all do. It's just that we don't really own much of value. Not even the land under our feet most of the time.
Clearly, these "militia" guys feel that their property rights have been diminished in some way. They should try living in a small, rented apartment in a city. Property rights are just a couple of words to a large and growing number of Americans.
I'm just musing, not even ranting.
I remember how my grandfather would go out and "check the fences" on his farm. He knew what was his and he protected it. He took responsibility for it.
Further back, my ancestors were willing to suffer and sacrifice, even risk their lives, to own their land, land in the wilderness. No amenities. Hard work. Wild animals (which we so endearingly call "wildlife" today). Drought. Floods. It was pretty miserable at times, I'm sure, but "ownership" was what they wanted. And I'm grateful to them for what they survived.
Most of us Americans today don't have any idea of what it is like to have land, to have livestock on land, to protect what is ours, to take responsibility for it. We are lucky if we have a pension and/or Social Security when we retire. A barnyard and a few chickens, a son to farm when we are too old to do it? That's not how we live any more.
These fools who call themselves a "militia," are up against history, against reality. They don't seem to realize that what they think is worth fighting for is a dream of the past. And it wasn't all that great even when it was the reality.
Today, a select few, often self-selected, often living on the edge financially, have their "own" businesses. (As long as they can float an occasional loan or rely on a credit line.) Yes. Even small businesses are very often running on debt. Even a lot of landlords are paying off mortgages.
Am I just seeing life from an urban point of view?
Is my view too bleak?
Are we really a nation of property owners, a nation of citizens with the rights of property owners to control who comes and goes from our property? Am I wrong?
If not, where do we go from here?

When the Republican candidates start lining up in support they could be billed for the same. Win-win situation.
Eventually someone is going to be so embarrassed by it they will have to call the whole thing off.
