TYT: Electronic Tracking Of Students - Texas Schools See Big Money

"Following the lead of two other school districts in the state, San Antonio, Texas' Northside Independent School District is planning a pilot program that tracks students using transmitters inside identification cards. Why? For the money, apparently. Next year, ID cards outfitted with Radio Frequency Identification System (RFID) technology will be given to students at John Jay High School, Anson Jones Middle School, and all special education students who use district buses — totaling around 6,290 students, according to The San Antonio Express-News. If the pilot program is successful, the district wants to use the ID cards at all of its 111 schools, with a student population of almost 100,000...".* Ana Kasparian and Cenk Uygur discuss on The Young Turks.

I spoke extensively with Katherine Albrecht about ten years ago on this very subject, a time when most people had no clue what RFID chips even where. Her predictions were spot on. Credit cards, "Minority Report" store advertisements, etc. Retailers claim the chips are just for inventory control, and it is true that a scanner can read an entire container of goods from a dozen feet away, but the real purpose is targeted advertising. Wearing something you bought at WalMart? Be prepared for flat-screen advertising for the same or even a competing brand as you walk through the aisles. Flashing sale tags tied to your RFID chips can even give you different pricing, especially if the chip in your "loyalty" card helps identify you as a sucker.

But the most important thing Cenk said in that clip was "we never draw the line". The TSA is a perfect example of that. As variously quoted, Ben Franklin said, "Any society that would sacrifice a little liberty for a little security deserves neither and will lose both." Wave to the drones for me.
