Hillary trends conservative on defense and military, finance and trade issues. This is simple fact, not up for debate. They need to stop denying it or trying to tell us she is progressive on these issues; just be honest and admit that they agree. Honesty is always best.

(59,504 posts)It's more common variation was what a math professor at IU referred to as proof by intimidation. That was where students would start on both ends of an equality they were assigned to prove and then - when they could not legitimately connect them, just put:
"Therefore, " between the two pieces - hoping that for some reason they didn't get that the two pieces really did come together.
He strongly suggested that we NEVER submit something like that on a test ... and he would gave absolutely no credit for the meanderings.

(1,150 posts)I'm pretty good at perceiving the biases and agendas underlying BS.
Your agenda is to sell the position that the current leadership of the Democratic National Committee, as well as the composition of the present members of the Democratic Party who hold elected office at the national level, are the Democratic Party.
This would, therefore, mean that any difference of opinion a person may have with the positions of any of these parties, particularly with respect to their preferred candidates for the office of the President of the United States, would really mean that a person who takes action based on this difference of opinion is acting against the Democratic Party.
This is a severely authoritarian perspective on the nature of the Democratic Party and its role in the American political process. If it became generally accepted, it would mean that the only appropriate parties in Party decision-making and the establishment of agendas would be those who already are in positions of power and influence at the national level of the Party.
One of the consequences of the widespread adoption of this perspective would be an abrupt end to the value of the Democratic Party as a mechanism for representative democracy. It's completely predictable because it's a frequent occurrence in history. A power structure that came to power via popular support becomes insulated, eventually acts against the entire system by which it came to power (because if people were able to put them in power, they could do the same thing to someone else and replace them), and cares only about its hold on power and its benefits.
The Democratic Party has existed, in some form, almost as long as the United States itself. It has undergone many major changes over the years, and it will undergo more as American civilization evolves and social and structural changes mandate changes. It is no longer the public face of severe racism and segregation in the South, for example, that it was from the 'Reconstruction' era to the the mid 1960s.
If you are a supporter of a political party and challenge the current holders of power in a political party because of their positions, you aren't 'battling' against the party, you're advocating for change within it. This is a necessary function of a political party which operates in the context of representative democracy. Sometimes the people at the top are the wrong people at a particular time, and must be challenged. Sometimes they're not. Sometimes the people advocating for change are wrong. But that's how things go. If you don't like it, then maybe representative democracy just isn't your thing.

It's a lot more work (big time... that post certainly was - whew...) than cheerleading for your favorite positions (or candidates...) or taking cheap shots at others'. But if all we do is pick sides, throw shit at the others and see what sticks, we're just a bunch of 10-year-olds at recess.
Since that's a pretty apt description of the Republican nomination process this year (except that even the worst 10-year-olds on the playground rarely sink so low), I figure maybe we might be able to do a bit better. Probably. OK, maybe, say, once a month. Well, a guy can dream .

(14,881 posts)Math says that he knocked ~30% off Hill's 300+ point lead in the recent primaries & caucuses.
Math says that Hill needs to win ~62 % of all remaining delegates in the upcoming primaries to lock in the nomination via pledged delegates. That's after having only won 57% of them in the 1st half of the primaries, which were her stronger states.
Math + upcoming states + momentum says that Bernie can stop her from locking in the nomination which takes it to the convention floor.
And life says *anything* can happen between now and the convention. Hill's not likely to actually be indicted, but nothing says one or another of her closest aides won't be. Hill's not likely to suffer a pulmonary embolism, but her medical history says it's possible. Although these quotes come from Pope Francis, they very well could have been attributed to Bernie Sanders.
Human rights are not only violated by terrorism, repression or assassination, but also by unfair economic structures that creates huge inequalities.
We must restore hope to young people, help the old, be open to the future, spread love. Be poor among the poor. We need to include the excluded and preach peace.
This is important: to get to know people, listen, expand the circle of ideas. The world is crisscrossed by roads that come closer together and move apart, but the important thing is that they lead towards the Good.
Climate change is a problem which can no longer be left to our future generation.

(15,480 posts)And the one day conference is 4 days before the New York election!
WASHINGTON, April 8 (Reuters) - U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders announced on Friday he had accepted an invitation to the Vatican, saying his views on fighting income equality were similar to those of Pope Francis.
I am a big, big fan of the pope, Sanders said in an interview on MSNBC. Hes trying to inject this sense of morality into how we do economics ... and we need that absolutely desperately.
The Sanders campaign said in a statement that he would attend a conference on social, economic and environmental issues during the April 15 visit. Sanders, who has made fighting poverty a central issue of his campaign, said he would talk about how to create a moral economy during his visit.
The visit will come four days before the primary election in delegate-rich New York, a state that both Sanders and his rival Democrat Hillary Clinton are viewing as home turf and hoping to win.
The announcement of Sanders trip came as the pope called for a church that was less strict and more compassionate toward imperfect Catholics. Sanders said he admires the pope for talking about the worship of money, the greed thats out there. There are people who think that Bernie Sanders is radical, Sanders said on MSNBC. Her boss just came out and debunked Bloomberg's report, saying that he (The Monsiegnor) initiated the invite and that Archer concurred.
The campaign emailed a copy of their invite to Reuters -- it had the Monseignor's and Archer's names on it.

But the invitation was actually made by Marcelo Sánchez Sorondo, the chancellor of the pontifical academy, an autonomous institution that receives some funding from the Holy See but is not officially part of it.
In a March 30 letter inviting Sanders to the event, Sánchez Sorondo wrote, "On behalf of the President, Professor Margaret Archer, the Organizers, and as Chancellor, I am very happy to invite you to attend the meeting on 'Centesimus Annus: 25 Years Later.' The meeting, which is humanitarian in its objects, will be held at the Casina Pio IV, the headquarters of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, from 15 to 16 April 2016."

U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders was invited to speak at an April 15 Vatican event by the Vatican, a senior papal official said on Friday, denying a report that Sanders had invited himself.
"I deny that. It was not that way," Monsignor Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo told Reuters in a telephone interview while he was traveling in New York. Sorondo, a close aide to Pope Francis, is chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, which is hosting the event.

(51,607 posts)Mr. Sanders did not initially correct interviewers who suggested that he would meet with the pope, but he later clarified that he had not confirmed whether the two men would actually meet.
Further confusion about the trip bubbled up on Friday afternoon when the Vatican press office made clear that it had not issued the invitation, but that it had come from the academy. It said that there was no indication that Mr. Sanders would meet with Francis.
Meanwhile, Margaret Archer, the academys president, told Bloomberg News that Mr. Sanders had actively solicited the invitation for political purposes.
Sanders made the first move, for the obvious reasons, Ms. Archer said. I think in a sense he may be going for the Catholic vote, but this is not the Catholic vote, and he should remember that and act accordingly not that he will.
But hours later, Monsignor Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, a senior papal official and the academys chancellor, denied that Mr. Sanders had invited himself to the event. He told Reuters that it was his idea to invite the senator.

Or it is more likely that the same conservative types that snuck Kim Davis into his holiness' presence are rearing their ugly heads again?
That's all I had to say on it. I'll be justifying that ridiculous trite with not on more moment of attention of thought.
Also Hilary would have shown up but they can't afford her! BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE!

(60,339 posts)Vatican says Bernie reached out to them to obtain the invite and it sounds like they are not happy with him playing politics with this.

(14,881 posts)Papal official denies report Sanders invited himself to Vatican
He said it was his idea to invite Sanders.

(7,321 posts)that'll be an interesting conversation on the international stage. Good on the Pope for making the invitation, and good on Bernie for graciously accepting.
Can't wait to hear about that meeting. So I missed when this is to take place.. anyone have that?

(15,435 posts)that OUR LEADERS should listen to. But sadly, they only see $$$$$ and kneel down to worship there mighty dollar!
WHEN does anyone think that those who now CONTROL MSM and so much more are going to WAKE UP to what "we the people" WANT and NEED!
I was once a Catholic, but left the church a long time ago. Never joined another one either, but talk about an ENDORSEMENT... this is YUUUUUUUGGGGGGE!
The Whole World IS Really Watching! THEY see it, other countries see it BUT this country which was once known as a Shining Beacon of Democracy simply WON'T see it!
WE THE PEOPLE must help get Bernie elected, but then we MUST HELP this man bring back Our Democracy! He can't do it alone and he's told us this from DAY ONE. He will face a barrage of NEGATIVITY and it's not going to be easy, but "we the people" need to making our voices heard!
What more is there to say? He IS thew best person to be POTUS!

(532 posts)... but I am tired and it is way past my bedtime, but I just saw on the news a few minutes ago that Bernie was not invited, but after he formally requested permission to attend, permission was granted.
The Vatican also issued a statement that the Pope did not invite him and would not be meeting with him when he attended.

Oh, and the pope won't be there, but lots of academic theologians will.
