Obama Betrays Campaign Promise to Label Genetically Engineered Food
In 2007, Senator Obama, campaigning for the presidency in the Democratic primary, promised to label genetically engineered food.
Now, if you write the Obama for America campaign about GMO labels, you get this response:
"Genetically modified crops hold out the promise of benefits like increased production and reduced reliance on pesticides. At the same time, some Americans want more information to help them choose their food. President Obama understands these concerns and is considering additional steps in this area."
What? How can he flip his position like that? What makes him believe Monsanto's lies? Why isn't he listening to the 9 out of 10 voters who want GMOs labeled? Is there anything we can do to get him back on our side before November?
The first step is to give Barack Obama a piece of our minds! Bill Maher did on his show last week, when he called the President out for breaking his campaign promise on GMO labels and putting Monsanto's Michael Taylor in charge of food safety. Please tell the Obama for America campaign what you think about broken promises.

What we have here is just the illusion of democracy.

(12,272 posts)Well, gee Nick; where do you think proof comes from? Studies. Who does the studies? It is unbelievable how corrupt the system has become. From the food we eat to the health care we receive, there is corruption along the way. Not everywhere, but in some key areas.
Now eat your fuckin' mutant chili.

(47,675 posts)That would be a five digit code. A leading '9' means organic, and the 3000 and 4000 ranges are for conventionally grown. Although I had a recent discussion about fresh corn not being labeled, the vast majority of produce has such a sticker on it or on the price tag associated with it. The problem is that this labeling is only for fresh produce, most people don't have a clue what the numbers mean, and any kind of processed food is just not going to have it anywhere on the label except for the FEW that explicitly state there are NO GMO ingredients.

(119 posts)Even hybrid, non gmo, created products can be harmful. In Texas a man lost his herd of dairy cattle to a hybrid grass which he had been using for 15 years. This grass started producing cyanide. His dairy herd was dead in a few hours after ingesting. It probably was caused by a random mutation.
The point is the producers of GMO seeds do not know or understand the long term effects of random mutations. These mutations may take a year or in the case of this hybrid grass 15 years. The effect of dna modifications on organisms was exemplified with a strain of salmon which was genetically modified. The salmon became impotent and developed sores and tumors, but the company that produced it touted it was safe before it was decided to stop the production.
If the bio engineering companies believe their GMO products do not cause harm then why are they so reluctant to label them so?

(1,932 posts)Broadcast (2012) Adam Rutherford meets a new creature created by American scientists, the spider-goat. It is part goat, part spider, and its milk can be used to create artificial spider's web. It is part of a new field of research, synthetic biology, with a radical aim: to break down nature into spare parts so that we can rebuild it however we please. This technology is already being used to make bio-diesel to power cars. Other researchers are looking at how we might, one day, control human emotions by sending 'biological machines' into our brains.

2009 Taylor comes in...ugh
Taylor is featured in the documentaries The Future of Food and The World According to Monsanto as a pertinent example of revolving door since he is a lawyer who has spent the last few decades moving between Monsanto and the FDA and USDA.
