President Obama's Speech On Fiscal Cliff: I Refuse To Accept Any Approach That Is Not Balanced (Original Post) mucifer Nov 2012 OP

Cuts are not needed. He should veto cuts to vital social programs as Bill Clinton did in 1995. limpyhobbler Nov 2012 #4

That's not how you're supposed to go into a negotiation, already giving away half the store.

Utter third way bullshit.

balanced approach. He held the line in taxing the 2%. He just said he'd open to some amount of compromise, AS HE SHOULD since THAT is GOVERNING. He is getting out in front on this. setting the tone, has the people behind him (literally), and it was a GREAT short address. He is putting some BIGTIME HEAT AND PRESSURE ON THE REPUKES !!

Cuts to Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid or Veterans benefits should be vetoed.

If the Congress can muster 2/3 to override a veto fine.

Otherwise I don't understand what you are arguing for.

What is the point of having a Democrat for President if he will not even veto Social Security cuts?

Obama is giving away half the stuff before even going into the haggling. That's a pretty crappy negotiating technique. He's not stupid, so he must be doing it on purpose.

If the President signs cuts to social programs without making Congress come up with a 2/3 majority, that will be a betrayal of middle-class and working-class America.

ymmv.

@limpyhobbler you deserve a lot of credit because i find it truly baffling why so many people here on DU refuse to realize that corruption can (and does) run rampant in our party too...its not just a republican thing. Obama is making it VERY clear he is going to make cuts because lets face it he does agree with republicans. I've always said that although Obama campaigns as a progressive it is only a trick since ALL politicians know that the public has progressive ideals....but when governing Obama is very much a center-right president. He is dying for the grande-bargain. He WILL make medicare cuts, etc.

So again, I applaud your posts. Sadly you (and like myself too) are on the clock of being banned from this site. We must drink the kool-aide.

Good move for him to make right after the election. For the republicans to NOT to agree to the middle class tax cuts now before they get to the major issue - that will be used in the next round coming up in 2014.
