But that was before we had a TV on from sunup to bedtime telling us to be afraid of things.
Parents were not afraid to let there kids go out and play

And it was said we'd eat a pound of dirt before we were grown (an exaggeration, I think.) And our cuts and skinned knees and elbows might get a swipe of Mercurochrome, maybe a band-aid or a kiss, but not much more. We girls had awful home perms (Toni) and even worse haircuts, done by our moms or a friend's mom at the kitchen table. The boys mostly had buzz cuts, also done at home. We didn't have a lot of clothes, and many were hand-me-downs if they lasted long enough, because we were pretty hard on them, and horror of horrors, they weren't washed every day. Actually we weren't washed every day either! We survived just fine, and I sometimes lament the march of "progress."
