2012 American Hero Dog and winner of the Military War Dogs Category

Retired Specialized Search Dog (SSD) Gabe has served our great country since 2006 when he first reported for duty. From training in Ft. Lewis, WA to completing over 210 combat missions with 26 explosive and weapons finds in Iraq, SSD Gabe still made time throughout each day to bring love and joy to his comrades. Since retiring in 2009, SSD Gabe has earned over 40 awards and coins of excellence for his heroic work. Today Gabe dedicates almost all of his free time working in his community and educating children and adults on the importance of adopting shelter pets, the value of respect, staying in school, and most importantly, being humane. Celebrate heroes like Gabe and support American Humane Association’s mission today.

Today's news below,

On this Valentine’s Day I have to share the heartbreaking news with you that Gabe passed away yesterday.

Gabe was very special to all of us at American Humane Association. He was named American Hero Dog for 2012 at the American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards™. Our thoughts are with Gabe’s owner, Sergeant 1st Class Chuck Shuck.

I’ve attached a short video of Gabe and his fellow Hero Dogs who were honored at our awards ceremony. (http://secure.smilebox.com/ecom/openTheBox?sendevent=4d7a557a4d6a497a4e6a52384e7a637a4e6a67344f44453d0d0a&sb=1) Please take a minute to watch it – it is a tribute to the amazing human-animal bond that brings so much beauty to our world.

You see, Hero Dogs like Gabe help their companions overcome the challenges of illness, search for missing people so they can be reunited with their loved ones, work with police officers and firemen to keep our communities safe, and more.

And like Gabe, you’re a hero, too. Through your membership in American Humane Association you’re giving the gift of LOVE and COMPASSION every day.

Your membership has saved more than 70,000 animals from natural disasters like Hurricane Sandy… provided urgent medical care to abused pets… offered hope to children with cancer through our animal therapy programs… helped pass legislation to protect children from abuse and neglect… and much, much more.

In honor of Gabe’s service to humanity, I’m hoping you’ll make a special Valentine’s Day contribution of $15, $25 or more to American Humane Association.

Sergeant 1st Class Chuck Shuck and Gabe both risked their lives in service to our nation. In turn, their service saved the lives of many men and women of our Armed Forces.

Our condolences go out to Sergeant 1st Class Chuck Shuck. But this I know in my heart: Even through Gabe has crossed the Rainbow Bridge, he will live on in the hearts of all of us who fight to give voice to the voiceless and bring love and compassion to at-risk children and animals.

donateTab.jpg Thank you for your friendship and humanity. I hope you watch the short video paying tribute to Gabe and his fellow Hero Dogs. And please, keep Sergeant 1st Class Chuck Shuck and Gabe in your thoughts.

Sincerely,

Dr. Robin Ganzert
President & CEO
American Humane Association

Condolences to Chuck Shuck too.

Animals are so much more noble than we are.
