Obama Compares Congress To Preschoolers During Education Speech: Could Use A ‘Time Out’

President Obama took his State of the Union message about early education to Decatur, Georgia Thursday afternoon. The state was of two he singled out in his address for its exemplary preschool programs. Obama’s speech was primarily an optimistic push for more access to early childhood education, but he did manage to inject one dig at his Washington colleagues.

Obama shared his experience from earlier in the day, when he visited classrooms at Decatur’s College Heights Early Childhood Learning Center. “What we saw in the classroom here today,” Obama said, “is kids are taught numbers, they’re taught shapes, but also how to answer questions, discover patterns and how to play well with others.”

He began praising the teachers when he briefly got sidetracked. “That whole playing well with others thing is a trait we could use more in Washington,” Obama joked. “Maybe we need to bring the teachers up. Every once in a while have some quiet time.” Positioning his hands into a “T,” he added “Time out.”
