The Beer Winner is Bud Light Lime

Last edited Wed May 30, 2012, 09:54 AM - Edit history (2)

I'm happy with it

Edit -

I'm going to clarify something:

I'm not a regular beer drinker and I've spent the last fifty years by not being a regular beer drinker. I wanted something that was palatable to my current tastes to see perhaps what may come of that.

Two things you should know, I rarely drink to get drunk and I usually go for things that I like the taste of. So looking at the beer case at the store, I chose one particular beer that seemed to suit my tastes at the time.

I take your reaction as an indication that I was making some kind of judgment call on all of your individual tastes. That is not the case. Or, that I lack a sufficient amount of beer purism. Of course, I don't regularly drink the stuff. For me, beer is merely something to be consumed occasionally, not religiously.

Apparently, we're having a breakdown in communication here. I only have myself to blame for that.

So, if I've somehow offended your sensibilities by liking (and I did like it, by the way) what you all regard as a clearly inferior product, I apologize for my apparent lack of sufficient sophistication.

Perhaps, I may come to appreciate and achieve all of your levels of own expertise in the wide-ranging field of beer consumables some fine day.

However, for now I only ask that you allow me to find my own way based on my own preferences as they may be.

It's only fair, is it not?

from time to time.

I used to drink a lot of Miller Lite because my mom worked for Miller and got free beer every month. Miller also bottles Icehouse and I got into that for a while because I thought it tasted a little better and it had a higher alcohol content than Lite. Then I got into Leinenkugels Honey Weiss for a little bit. I had tried a wheat beer somewhere and I found the taste to be very refreshing. Then I got into Blue Moon for a while because the flavor was more striking, but after a while it started to taste too tart to me. Now I'm digging Sam Adams Boston Lager, and I'll probably consume about six of them at the cookout I'm about to go to.

Some beer drinkers go through life consuming one brand of beer, though. My step-dad's father drove a beer truck and had access to all sorts of beer, but would only drink Blatz which I don't think exists now days. That was some nasty shit. I guess maybe it was an acquired taste. That and you could get it for 60 cents a can at a neighborhood bar.

I can handle a mixed drink here and there and I did go on a Jack and Coke tear briefly a while back, but liquor generally does not agree with me. I don't like wine either.

I practically live in Mexico but I don't care for lime in beer, however if you really want to do that for goodness sake, get some corona or something and some key limes and do it correctly!

even bud light if you insist, but use real limes

you also might like michalada, half REAL lime or lemonade and half beer over ice (lots of versions of michaladas - many have clamato or tabasco etc etc)

The US craft beer that makes it over to the UK is all very hop-forward and as such mild (by definition only mildly hopped beer) isn't included in that.

Here in the UK, May is "Mild month" according to the Campaign for Real Ale, which is part of CAMRA's attempts to preserve the unfashionable beer style that is mild.

As to wheat beer, I much prefer the German Weisse beers to the American ones, although Maui Manu Wheat (pineapple wheat beer from Hawaii) might well be worth a pop

I think I may have missed the local mild festival this year, which is too bad. I really do not understand the super-hopped thing with beer, and I especially don't understand the popularity of some of those beers in the UK where there is almost always much better locally made stuff.

Lots of UK brewers use American hops such as Cascade, Amarillo, Centennial, Simcoe and so on. And of course it's American craft beer that inspired that.

Mild & Bitter are increasingly unfashionable, which is a shame really, even though Im very partial to a good American style pale ale myself.

I like traditional styles generally, but don't begrudge trying new things. A number of my favourite US beers are so because they are unique styles. When I drink beer in the UK I generally go for real ales (especially porters, when they're on), but have been far more of a bourbon drinker for the past few years.

...Galaxy & Stella hops from Australia are getting popular over here and Thornbridge have recently started using another Australian variety called Topaz (the resulting pale ale is outstanding).

As to Porter, I will admit that the best bottled porter I've come across is Odell Cutthroat Porter from Colorado. Odell have also done a number of collaboration beers with UK breweries (2 with Thornbridge, 1 with DarkStar and 1 with Rooster's in the pipeline).

My own favourite type of beer at the moment would have to be Citra-hopped pale ales........US hops again!

And yes, I'm a real ale enthusiast living near Sheffield, which is the best place in the UK for real ale. The Kelham Island area of Sheffield happens to be the best pub crawl in Britain.

I guess they're only doing it for May, which seems strange, because it would be a great summer session beer.

I can't say I have a favourite porter, but one I've been drinking lately that's really good is from this Norwegian brewery: http://www.nogne-o.com/ They don't do anything especially unique, but their beers are always an excellent example of the style.

With a chicken & leek pie in Ossett breweries Sheffield pub, The Hop. http://www.thehop-sheffield.com/default.aspx

It's the best thing that Ossett brew by a distance, although I'm not generally a fan of Ossett beers. My favourite UK breweries at the moment are Acorn, Saltaire, Marble, Raw and DarkStar. Thornbridge are also very big round here. They are taking over the leases on a number of pubs in Sheffield, but they have political baggage as the owner's wife is the majority shareholder in "workfare" provider A4E. This thread has more info. http://www.democraticunderground.com/1088411

The beers I've had from Nogne have been great, although they can be quite pricey.

Osset beers are fairly common in real ale outlets here in the North of England but I don't think I've ever come across their beer down South.

I can't imagine them exporting too much either. I can see Americans coming across beers like Jaipur & Punk IPA from the UK far more then Ossett Citra.

I've definitely never seen it outside of the area.

I don't think I've ever seen Jaipur in the US, but there are some Black Sheep beers exported there - only in bottles that I know of. Things may have changed in the years I've lived away, but I'm afraid that most English beers wouldn't be appreciated by American beer drinkers who seem to favour either light lagers or hoppy and fizzy ales.

I live just outside Sheffield, so not all that far away. This is the beer festival I'll be doing this weekend, across a number of pubs and Barlow Brewery. Didn't go last year but the previous year I spent the entire festival at the Coach & Horses, which is the Thornbridge tap pub and home to Sheffield FC, the world's oldest football club. Even got to meet James Watt of Brewdog & his Jack Russell terrier!

As to English beers not being appreciated in the states, English beer styles such as IPA & porter seem quite popular with US craft breweries.

There's Belgian lambic beer which has fruit in, but that's because lambic beer is incredibly sour and needs the fruit to sweeten it up.
