it's been a long and sometimes scary three weeks, but they've got lines laid around the whole fire. most of the evacuations are lifted, but now comes the rebuilding.
still absurdly hot, but we've had some higher humidity and much calmer winds, but things change quickly here.
thank you to all the kind duers who supported us over the last three weeks, my thoughts continue to go out to the people down in colorado springs and all over the region who are still battling flames.
and it can't be said enough, i am beyond grateful for all the firefighters and others, paid and volunteer, who helped keep us safe.
edit to add: i'm referring to the high park fire in northern colorado.

I'm glad you and your loved ones are OK...

(24,146 posts)they'd been saying it would be mid- to late-july before full containment, they got the breaks when they needed them.

(9,077 posts)Thanks to them & all who helped. Good luck to those who came through it. The rebuilding begins. I'm glad you made it through safely. Hope you get some rain soon.
fizzgig
(24,146 posts)we've been getting some afternoon showers but not much and that's actually been better. the one heavy rain we had turned the river black from the runoff, so i'm hoping it stays in moderation.

(1,013 posts)AND I did go to the change.org site to sign the petition to get health care for our wildfire firefighters. It just doesn't make sense, all those sitting in DC in gridlock, dug in and doing nothing, and they have health insurance.... Politicians should be paid by the hour, HA they'ld all be applying for food stamps then eh? They haven't the wherewithal to fight a fire on a mountain.
Hope you sleep well at last, and that all those whose life has been severely altered find joy in anything.
fizzgig
(24,146 posts)i hadn't seen that petition, i just signed it myself.
i just about had a rage stroke when mittens made that crack about having too many firefighters. disgusting pukes.
thank you again

(13,871 posts)(and I'm not a believer), but, my sister lives near Denver, and I have been horrified by the scenes of people losing their homes. So, thank you god, nature, weatherman for the rain.
I'm seeing a lot of silence and pondering when my right wing friends gripe about the 'government takeover of health care" and I ask them where they were when the government tool over police and fire protection.

(24,146 posts)i wouldn't say i was praying to god, but i was definitely praying to our mother for relief. things could have gotten a lot worse.
i hope your sister has been ok with the terrible air quality. i've been coughing for a couple weeks.

(17,086 posts)Down here in Montezuma County, the Weber fire was at 45% containment as of Friday. They only lost one structure so far! The fact that the local paper hasn't published any updates since Friday is encouraging. The estimate to it being "out" is July 5... We also have the "Escarpment" fire just south of Cortez, but it seems to be isolated by topography and stayed small (60 acres).
The local coverage is pretty good on fire fighting operations, if folks are interested: http://www.cortezjournal.com/article/20120701/NEWS01/706299897/Hot-to-the-touch

(24,146 posts)thanks for the link, i read a few stories and they are pretty good. i was shocked at how well our local paper handled the fire, they did a really good job (and it sticks in my craw to say that )

(17,086 posts)My local paper is weak soup at best, but they did all right with their fire coverage.

(27,995 posts)We've had some afternoon thunderstorms recently here in the mountains of eastern AZ. The rain is desperately needed, but the lightening is still a concern.
fizzgig
(24,146 posts)so much dry lightening, although we did get some rain in town. now there's the issue of runoff into the river, sucks to be concerned by rain.

(24,146 posts)haven't really noticed any smoke smell for at least a week and the haze has cleared a lot. i'd had a bit of a cough since the fire started at it's pretty well gone, but i'm sure people with asthma or increased sensitivity are still feeling it.
there were a couple days earlier on that the town was blanketed in smoke, ash raining down on the west side of town. it woke me up more than a couple times.

(32,723 posts)It was really strange. A few days later I was heading to Vegas and just as I hit the 57 North above the 91 I saw where another fire caused by arson broke out towards Corona. There was almost no wind and I wish I'd had my camera because I swear it looked just like an atomic bomb had gone off. A perfect mushroom cloud lit up orange in the setting sun against a blue sky.
The weird thing is that's the place in the classic movie "War of the Worlds" where they tried to stop the martians with an A-bomb.
