5. I find it rather encouraging that this "news" is a snooze.

I remember when Ellen's character came out in May 1997 on her sitcom. It was a brave thing for her to do, because tv stations in the Bible Belt boycotted, sponsors fled, and her career was pronounced DOA. They cancelled the show the following fall/winter. It was considered "scandalous" and puritanical, judgmental tongues were wagging.

Now, save for far-fewer-than-a-million bigoted moms, no one cares if Ellen promotes JC Penney and her show is one of the most successful in syndication, everyone laughs along with Cameron and Mitchell on Wednesday nights, and no one cares one way or the other if Anderson Cooper is gay or straight.

I think that is progress.

My daughter also loves her and watches her shows all the time. My wife and I took our daughter to see Kathy live for our daughter's 18th birthday - it was a good thing we didn't go the day before because she would have been too young to hear such saucy talk!
