(11,943 posts)Check out Sierra Trading Co. online for a vest. I like Columbia sport in fleece. Light enough for indoor but toasty. Columbia has their own site and sometimes has deals. Make haste for cyber Monday.

(87,112 posts)Almost any weight is good. If you get one of Icelandic wool (boiled or not), it will be super lightweight and amazingly warm. I would love to have a cardigan of that stuff.
ETA: So I decided to find some links.

(87,112 posts)I haven't decided which one I'm getting me for a present yet. So many choices that I like.
It's hard to go wrong with a quality wool item, they last and they really keep you warm. Glad you could choose so quickly! I hope he likes it too.

(6,144 posts)Do they actually boil it?
It is wool that is heated to shrink into a very tight weave, also called felting as in turning it into felt.

(14,157 posts)another approach to added warmth might be a Merino wool or wool blend undershirt and knit cap or wool beret.
It's no fun being uncomfortable indoors or out.

(14,157 posts)I just removed one of my larger lined Irish tweed waistcoats, which I had been wearing over a tighter fitting Scottish wool sweater vest.
It's delightful to have flexibility in layering.
TexasBushwhacker
(20,264 posts)It makes no sense for me to invest in a heavy winter coat because we rarely have temps below freezing. Even with our MEGA FREEZE last February, I just piled on the layers. Then I can peel them off when it's warmer inside.
