Original trek was more Kirk/Spock/Bones relationship. Next Gen was Picard, Geordi, Doctor, Data, etc... the whole crew got their moment

Your schoolteachers probably taught you that fighting doesn't solve anything. It's a good thing Kirk doesn't listen to hardly anybody because he cleaned up the entire Alpha Quadrant with little more than a starship and his fists. Picard hardly ever threw a punch and as a result got mired in one diplomatic standoff after another.

Another example of Kirk's awesomeness was his fistfight with Khan. Khan asserted that Kirk couldn't win because he had five times his strength. Picard would have done the math, agreed with him, and sued for peace. Kirk used lateral thinking and balanced the scales with a simple PVC pipe, bludgeoning Khan mercilessly with it.

Kirk was wise enough to realize that not all problems could be solved with a simple punch to the face. Some scenarios called for the double-fist punch to the back!

For me, it's not close. And, I liked Kirk, Janeway, Sisko, & Archer.
But, Picard strikes me as the kind of person a starship captain needs to be.

I’m an unabashed fan of Enterprise. Archer, as captain of the first Earth starship, had to make humans first forays into the galaxy.

ETA: Second choice, Captain Janeway.

Season 1 was good enough to warrant season 2.

Season 2 was often ponderous.

Why did the Klingons lose their forehead ridges?

What happened to the Defiant?

What happened to Khan's DNA?

And more!

Question was a test as to whether Sheldon would accept Leonard as roommate.

Like Picard, I have no children of my own. But, I would choose Picard over Kirk as a role model for my nephews.

20. A long time ago, I read an article about Space 1999.

The article described how Space 1999 evolved from the series UFO.

UFO was described as having paranoid characters who shoot first and ask questions later when fighting aliens. Space 1999 indeed followed suit. Commander Koenig was paranoid about aliens.

As a kid, I loved 1999 ( but I knew it was no Star Trek in its greatness). Space 1999 aired around the same time as the Star Trek animated series. This explains why Walter Koenig (Chekov) was not in the animated series. He was in 1999 playing the alien Oro.

As an adult, I watched a few episodes of 1999 and found it to be often cringy in its silliness. UFO was never silly.

I loved Space: 1999 when I was young. The visuals, sets, special effects, theme song, etc. The Eagle is still one of my favorite sci-fi ships ever... But, watching as an adult... It is cringy. No concept of a prime directive happening in that show.

Don't forget the belt-worn com-locks and unique laser guns. Perhaps even the uniforms.

So much was good, all for so very little.

(I made a mistake above. The Alien Oro is from the Starlost. It's a sci-fi show also from the early 1970s that's even sillier than Space 1999.)

Most overrated: Sisko
