1) It was municipal court jury duty so it only took me 5 minutes to get there.
2) There were parking spots up front so it was a short walk.
3) Judge comes in 10 minutes after I get there and says no jury trials today so we can all go home.
4) I get out of work all day, and still get paid.

(6,581 posts)When I spent a day on jury duty, I lost a day's pay, but got $25 from the State of Michigan for my trouble, plus another $1.40 for mileage.
Seems fair.

(36,827 posts)Fortunately I was getting paid, but most weren't. On Monday the line ran out the door for people trying to get out of it. Almost none did.

(10,952 posts)a bandit. I served for 3 weeks for which I was compensated $15 plus mileage per day. Mileage was paid according to your legal residence. However, at the time I was actually living in the city where I would serve jury duty due to winter weather and was actually within walking distance of the court. On top of that I still got my full pay from my job. It was like being on vacation and my Christmas shopping was paid for that year by the Court.

(4,033 posts)It was 1st degree murder trial (4 weeks) then one week for the sentencing. The sentence could either be the death penalty or life without parole.
The Judge told the jury that while deciding the sentencing they could not take into account their personal feelings about the death penalty.
When they began their deliberations, it was 10-2 for the death penalty. The 2 against were 2 women, who kept saying that Christ wouldn't want them to decide to have this man sentenced to death. They also, said that maybe the defendant would change in prison and be a better man when he was paroled, even though the sentence would be life without parole.
No matter how much the 10 jurors told them what the Judge said, they would not change their mind. It was then settled at 10-2, which meant the man would be sentenced to life with no chance of parole. Before leaving the deliberation room, the Sheriff that had accompanied the jurors everywhere, said to them "I couldn't tell you this before, but the defendant will be going back to court in a few weeks, he's charged with raping 2 women.
The 2 who would not vote for the death penalty, almost simultaneously reached for garbage cans and vomited into them.
My nephew has a great job with a bank, and received his full pay while doing his civic duty. He said he learned so much, including the depravity of a man.

(12,132 posts)full pay for any days we are on jury duty and it doesn't count against our PTO days.

(36,827 posts)The great part about it for me was I was scheduled to work the graveyard shift, so even though I got out of jury duty early I couldn't go back to work.

This is awesome news. I live in the wingnuttiest county in Texas. The last time I had jury duty at the county I had to tell a wingnut I was going to go sit somewhere else because I didn't care to listen to him anymore. I listened to his bullshit for about 30 minutes until he started in on the racist crap. I think I'd rather scrub truck stop toilets all day than do county jury duty.

(30,754 posts)I was there for a couple of hours and we were all sent home. Everyone pleaded guilty.
My work paid me the difference between what the jury duty paid and my base pay at work. I ended up with exactly what I would have earned if I had gone to work. But, I had a day off and I took a nap.
My dad was on a sequestered jury once, for a murder trial.
