The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsLounge, help quick. 12 days of beard. Keep it or shave it off?
Decided to see how I would look. Never did this before, well i guess at 47 now or never.
Well, it's pretty thick and full. But mostly gray and looks like hell.
So, decision time. Keep going with this or shave it off? I look pretty bad in the mirror.

C'mon, now!
Denninmi
(6,581 posts)But I'll say this much , I look like David Hyde Pierce quite a bit - imagine an older Niles Crane 40 lbs overweight with gray hair and a scruffy beard about half an inch long.
and now you know my shame and disgrace!
Fridays Child
(23,998 posts)IMHO, anyway.
So, without photos, I'm going to have to say shave the beard but that's just my personal aversion to facial hair.

(6,581 posts)That's one non-vote and one keep it, so it's safe for the next 12-13 hours.
more comments welcome.

(6,279 posts)Unless the convenience of not shaving is more important to you, I think you've answered your own question...
12 days that's probably expected.
Right now leaning towards putting it on a probationary period.

(6,279 posts)if you're still thinking about it the last thing you want to to is end the experiment prematurely!

(6,581 posts)Yeah, and this probably won't help that situation.

(14,400 posts)when I was 42, as soon as I figured out it had so much grey in it I shaved it the hell off and never tried it again.
Denninmi
(6,581 posts)Or I'd that a never ending pain in the ass?

(14,400 posts)I know a co-worker here uses that Just For Men Beard thing and it seems to work well for him. He has black hair and his beard started to go grey well before his head did so he had no problems.
I didn't try it because I was afraid of it looking different from my regular hair, then I'd have to dye that too and pretty soon it would all go to hell and I would wind up with green hair.

(6,011 posts)If you do decide to shave, you could subscribe to razor blades by mail club- (heard about it on All Things Considered on NPR) unless you have an electric shaver.

Give it up to a month, ESPECIALLY if it's a first time. Make sure you condition it well in
the shower -- beard hair is usually coarser and stiffer than head hair.
.
One of the most fun things I've found about beards is that when I've decided to take
it off (not in a LONG time now), I've taken it off a little area at at time. I'd have ten
different beards in ten days -- and sometimes found that "partial beard" to be cool
enough to keep for awhile.

My big brother, MiddleFingerMomTom, had a 10-year-old (or older) beard that was
shaped but almost down to his navel (he also had BEAUTIFUL silky hair down to his
butt). One time when I went to visit him, this guy answered the door and I started
to ask him where my brother was. It was him, clean-shaven -- and if I hadn't been at
his front door, I never would have known who the hell he was.
.
My BIL was in advertising and the two of them looked for an agency that would use
him as a model when he shaved ("If our razor can handle THIS, just think what it
could do for you" , but they didn't find any takers. He did it anyway.

(47,675 posts)I haven't shaved or cut my hair in years and I look like Tommy Chong, but I like my beard and mustache long, as well as my hair, and my wife likes it too. I've tried the short trim beard and always found it itchy and coarse. It's really soft when long.
Denninmi
(6,581 posts)Going to be on the short to very short side. I think that would be the best look for me,
HopeHoops
(47,675 posts)It's got a bunch of attachments. I've got one, but I don't use it now. I just use sewing scissors to trim the cookie duster every once in a while. Otherwise it gets covered in beer foam.
You don't want to be running to a barber every time you become a "scruffy-looking nerf herder". The kit is cheaper.
Denninmi
(6,581 posts)Yup, hear you in the trimmer. Easy. Thanks.

(6,581 posts)Gonna try dyeing it. Stopped and bought "Just For Men" blond/brown for facial hair.
If THAT looks like hell, well, I have a Gillette Fusion ready to go.

(54,436 posts)The high school I was graduating from begged me to shave it off, but they harassed me with gestapo like raids into my dorm room, so I didn't. But that wasn't the original reason I stopped shaving. I have REALLY sensitive skin, and if I shave every morning, my face looks redder than a boiled lobster and itches like crazy. Since at age 18, I already looked like a finalist in the casting for Revenge of the Nerds, I decided that the only way my social life could only get any worse than it already was, would be if I looked like a poster child for skin cancer research.
I just turned 60, and I still have it. Now there's no choice. If I shave it off, my wife would call the cops about the prowler who had somehow managed to steal my car and my house key, and imitate my voice with perfect pitch.
Denninmi
(6,581 posts)I tend to break out in big red patches that then develop into scales after using a blade, and only slightly less with an electric razor.
Anyway, it's done. I dyed it, and it came out pretty well if I do say so myself. Of course, I ignored the allergy test warning and just jumped in, LOL, so if my face falls off in 2 days I only have myself to blame. But I doubt an issue.
Denninmi
(6,581 posts)Used the Just For Men. Big difference not being gray. I like the look, it's a keeper for now.
