Yes, 50 years later, Love is still a colossal douchebag - ditto for his talentless hanger-on Bruce Johnston
Wouldn't it be nice...if the Beach Boys could finally all get along? Alas, it appears that the beloved icons--who have a long history of inter-band ups and downs--are not destined for peace in this lifetime. After delighting fans this year with a 50th anniversary reunion tour and album including revered frontman Brian Wilson, Mike Love has dropped a bomb on three of his surviving bandmates: He's going to continue touring without them. Under the name "The Beach Boys."
Love first made this announcement last week, when he unceremoniously stated that he planned to dump his cousin and creative lead Wilson, as well as original members Al Jardine and David Marks, to resume touring as the Beach Boys with second-generation bandmate Bruce Johnston and his own band, which he's been out with since the '90s. The story continues to gain momentum and shock fans this week, as the full lineup's final reunion shows approach. The classic Beach Boys' last two concerts will take place in London this week, on September 27 and 28.

Wilson told CNN that he's not happy with the decision. "I'm disappointed and can't understand why Love doesn't want to tour with Al, David and me," he said. "We are out here having so much fun. After all, we are the real Beach Boys." He also noted that he would like his next project to be a Beach Boys album.
Meanwhile, Jardine has tweeted a link to a fan's petition demanding Love reconsider his decision: "It's the right thing to do, and it's what the fans want!"

I knew this reunion would eventually collapse and Love would be the one behind it.

(220 posts)Hi,
Mike Love has always been the thorn in the Beach Boys side. When Brian Wilson first proposed the "Smile" album back in 60's as a concept album, Mike Love threw a hissy fit saying that the band should stick to hit singles & touring because that was where the money was. He has always had a difficult relationship with the band. A few years back when they got together for some anniversary & a big public thing. Everyone put on a nice polite public face, but they barely spoke to Love.
There have been many lawsuits amongst members of the band over the years. Odd behavior I would think of Love, since he claims to be a follower of the Zen religion.
By the way if you have never heard the "Smile" album that Brian Wilson finally completed & released in 2004, It is wonderful.

(417 posts)I love Surf's Up, that song is a work of art, not just music. Brian had been having back issues, I wondered if it had anything to do with that, but he was surprised to hear they broke up, so I guess it didn't involve his health, it's just Mike being Mike. Brian, Al and David shouldn't have been surprised, Mike has been doing stuff like this for 50 years. Mike needs to do more TM....

I figured Mike and Bruce would "Break Away" and go back to touring casinos and small venues. I saw the Mike and Bruce show a few years ago, and while it was a good show, it is NOTHING compared to having Brian, Al, and David onstage.
Mike may think that he has control over the Beach Boys, (he holds rights to tour under the band name ), this band is Brian and Carl's band. Brian was the creative genius behind the songs, he is the one who "f***ed with the formula, and gave us Pet Sounds, Smile, etc. Carl was the beautiful voice behind many of the songs, when Brian stopped touring, Carl was the leader of the BB IMHO. Al contributed some good music, and Denny, in my opinion, wrote and sang the most beautiful BB song "Forever"
The band sang of cars, surfing, school, summertime, but in reality, their band was a constant mess with dealing with Brian's dad Murry, in-fighting, drugs, Brian's emotional problems. I wish that I could have seen them together one last time, but they did not come to my area. I wish that Carl was still alive, this would not be happening.
No telling what happened to get to this point of the band breaking up.

(417 posts)in a decision with Brother Records he legally leased exclusive rights to tour under the Beach Boys name.
He sued Al Jardine because he had his own band "Beach Boys' friends and family" which included Carnie and Wendy Wilson, and Mike said that Al couldn't use the BB name. He sued Brian just before Smile came out, saying that Brian was using the BB name to promote his Smile album (which floors me, Brian IS the Beach Boys).
All this really started in 1994 when Mike sued Brian because of Murry Wilson not giving him proper creative credit on the songs he co-wrote on the first few albums. Murry had control of their catalog, and sold it to A&M for 750,000.00. Brian later sued to try and get the copyrights to the songs back. He lost but got 25 million in settlement, Mike sued Brian because he didn't get any royalties and because of the lack of credit for co-writing the songs.

(12 posts)One more thing, the "Mike and Bruce Beach Boys" casino shows and South American dates were already booked before the reunion tour even started. Mike Love is both a halfway decent frontman, AND an asshole, but I wasn't expecting him to stop playing shows when the reunion ended. He's an old man, set in his ways...constantly being on the road doing his Beach Boys schtick could be all he knows. At least he's staying active and not letting himself be confined to the retirement home (or one of several expensive homes in his case). Say what you will about Love, there's no denying the talents of two of his hired "Beach Boys", Scott Totten and John Cowsill. They were invaluable parts of the backup band for this year's reunion tour. Cowsill's pounding of the skins was some of the hardest rocking drumming on a Beach Boys tour since Denny Wilson was alive and not piss-drunk and/or coked out of his mind.
